Pantheon High Volume 1
Not my best random selections from the library. The former is the typical fanservice and cardboard relationships formula. The latter has a decent plot but heavy-handed storytelling at times as well as hideously "hip" dialogue that will be dated in a few years (also, it has some of the most pervasive pacing problems I've ever seen). At least it has loads of mythological details crammed in, which is pretty much why I picked it up in the first place.

Volumes 16-18 of Hana Kimi. All I can say is [spoiler]for goodness freakin' sake, KISS HER ALREADY!![/spoiler].
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.
Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.
But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. i read Blade of Immortal volume 16 today at my local bookstore. i had to re-read half of Blade of Immortal volume 15 to remember what was happening. i was also able to finish the first volume of Vagabond.
Vagabond did not strike me as impressive. i find it hard to believe that it's such a great series, but i will pursue the series awhile longer before coming to a solid conclusion...

Vagabond, all in all, did not impress me (from the 20 volumes I've read of it). Nothing shone that much and everything moved so ridiculously slowly. The worst example is when one volume ends with a face-off between two important characters... and so does the next volume. There's an entire volume of staring at one another, flashbacks, and psychological images of the fight.

Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.
Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.
But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. Eventually I'll write up more thoughtful reviews of all six. In brief, however, I can tell you that it was my least favorite by far. Those who are uptight about the Bible will find it trivializing. Almost all the humor utterly failed for me.
Beyond the fact that I didn't find it enjoyable at all, I have deeper concerns. It includes some stories you don't hear in Sunday School (the ones where God kills Hebrews for minor things, none of the sex stuff) which is fine except for the method of presentation. Seeing this one after another without context or any sensitivity for the matters at hand makes God seem capricious and bloodthirsty. If I were an atheist looking to mock this part of the Bible, I'd just scan those pages and have my work done for me.

Thus far, the best presentation of the Bible in comic form I've seen would be The Graphic Bible. Obviously not an extensive volume (or it would be impossible to lift), but a good effort.
One Piece volume 5
I find One Piece to be an entertaining enough series, just not purchase worthy due to a couple factors (personal cash constraints, hazy direction, sheer length, etc.). Thus for legality issues, I read it only in the bookshop.

yes, one piece is quite long, but i still find it to be quite an interesting series. it's unarguably (IMO) one of the most crazy, creative, cartoony series out there. the characters bring lots of laughs, and the artwork is something to look out for. many of the major fights in this series are also quite well-done.

Claymore volumes 1 and 2
i decided to try Claymore after hearing so much about it (UC seems to have taken quite a liking to the series actually). the first two volumes were quite interesting. the character design isn't the greatest, but the action is quite something. i'm also interested in the direction that the story is progressing. i will be sure to pursue this manga further...

Yeah, I do like it (though I am reserving my recommendation pending how the series ends). If you liked the first two volumes, keep reading. The plot will develop from the early stages as soon as they get out of Rabona (which is important but you don't know that yet).

Only 4 volumes have been published, and the chapters are currently near the end of hypothetical volume 5 or the beginning of volume 6. The Japanese covers are actually quite nifty, if you removed the dust jacket, they feature assorted colored panels with English dialogue on the cover and back.
