Most of the "long" anime series that people speak of were originally adapted from (usually on-going) manga series. This is all well and good, but one runs into problems like filler and weak (or non-existant) anime endings once the animators catch up with the serialized manga.
However, even if one removes the filler and stalling from such series, they would still classify as long anime.

Because some long series are just really that good. Others need to be that long to bring out the best of itself.

I haven't completed it, but I've watched most episodes of the 1980's Astro Boy series (which has 52 episodes in all).
The longest series I've actually finished is Fullmetal Alchemist.

Well here are the "long" series I have completed:

Hunter x Hunter - 62 episodes + 30 OVA episodes
Inuyasha - 167 episodes + I saw 1 of the movies
Rurouni Kenshin - 95 episodes + a few of the OVA episodes
Prince of Tennis - 178 + the movie/OVA and I started watching the new Tournament OVA but I decided I needed a long break from Tennis oriented animes

Also currently watching Bleach (but haven't completed it obviously)

So I guess out of what I have seen Prince of Tennis wins.

Does anyone know what the longest total series is? I'm guessing it's either Pokemon, Yu-gi-oh, or Sailor Moon. If Naruto and Bleach keep going like this though they might win.

:Edit: Jeez I can't believe the number of people saying 52 episode or less series. You people need to expand your watching range! There are a lot of animes that could not be fit into 26 episodes simply because the mangas they are based on are multi volumes long and the plot is too complex to be condensed like that.

Not that I'm saying all long animes are great. But you know not all filler episodes are awefull (Prince of Tennis is famous for having awesome filler episodes).

Sazae-san - 1820+ episodes
Doreamon - 1096+ episodes
Pokemon(combining all series) - 508+ episodes
Detective Conan/Case Closed - 485+ episodes
Kochikame - 367 episodes
One Piece - 319+ episodes
Crayon Shin-Chan also goes on here somewhere, but I couldn't get it straight as to how many episodes it actually has.

If you consider Dragonball and Dragonball Z as one series, and combine the various Yu-gi-oh series together then they would fit on there, but I was hesitant to do so. Sailor Moon only has 200 episodes.

Full Moon Wo Sagashite at 52 episodes.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

I'm sorry to say this, but that bug me a bit. If you want buy me the dvd's or send me rent dvd's of Bleach and Prince of Tennis, I'm not going to sit down and watch them or have the time to watch a 100+ eps show.

I will only go pass my 65 ep rule, if the story is good, but not when it over 100+ eps.

26 is the standard episode count for a season. Longer series are few and farther in between by comparison; not to mention the majority of the time the reason they're so stretched out is because they have no plot to speak of in the first place. Naruto. 220 episodes. Plot? I want to be the best ninja. One Piece. 319 episodes. Plot? I want to be the best pirate. Prince of Tennis. 178 episodes. Plot? I want to be the best tennis player. A bare bones premise and a lot of recycling of the Shounen formula will get you a long series, complete with capitalist commercialism and decidedly lower animation budgets. I cut One Piece some slack because all it's fans never claim it's anything that it's not, but my example remains true. Naruto is annoying, and Prince of Tennis is dull.

And there are certainly exceptions to the rule. I'm fairly certain Monster could never have been condensed down to 26 episodes (though possibly 50~). But the point remains that after a given period of time, these titles run out of steam, and are continuing more for the financial success of the producers than the quality of the story. I've never met a single person who liked the last arc of the Kenshin Anime.

Not to mention the majority of us Anime collectors are not independently wealthy enough to collect these mountains of DVDs, if we even have the free time to watch all these shows in the first place.

Length should never stand-in for quality.

I've never finished an entire show that was longer than 26 eps... i was working on Monster, but i had to clear space on my Harddrive, so I backed it up and stopped watching it... I'm gonna transfer some of them to my PS3 and start watching them again, I think...

I HAVE finished Sailormoon seasons, but I don't know if that counts... I've finished Classic, R, and S... Just not SuperS or Stars...

I think I saw every single episode of Superbook and Flying House, but I'm not sure how many episodes there were...

I'm currently working on Nadia, which I believe is 36 episodes... I'm not done with it, but I'm getting close...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evcNPfZlrZs Watch this movie なう。 It's legal, free... And it's more than its premise. It's not saying Fast Food is good food. Just watch it.

I've been looking at possibly investing in Nadia. I've only seen the movie and volume one of the DVD. So far, is it good?

After finishing Rozen Maiden, I plan to start watching Cardcapter Sakura. 70 episodes and 2 movies. So that will take the title of longest series I've watched.

As for my opinion with my limit of how long a series can be, it doesn't exist. As long as I like the story, it doesn't matter to me if it lasts for 1,000 episodes. I actually enjoy a really long series personally.

I have to say cardcaptor sakura is my longest...(70 eps and 2 movies) followed by fullmetal alchemist! 51 eps +movie) The only anime that comes close to those two would spiral and that one is pretty short(26 eps). I prefer my animes shorter since I Don't really have enough free time to watch alot of anime.

EDIT-

I have seen every episode of digimon season 1 and 2 plus the movie So i guess that might actually be my longest. especially if you consider them one series.

Whoa. Back up. I think my little add-in comment got understood.

I did not say: "All long series are great."

Nor did I say: "Anyone who doesn't watch long series is stupid."

I didn't even say:"Prince of Tennis is my favorite series ever. And it's the most exciting series ever." (Cause it's not and it isn't).

What I simply meant was that those people who have only see series that are 26 episodes long should branch out more. Series with very large casts of characters can not be crammed into 26 episodes. Or they can but then they just don't show everyone or the end of the series (Fruits Basket is the most obvious example I can think of at the moment.)

There are lots of good series that are 26 episodes long. There are also lots of good series that are longer then that. There definately comes a point where too many episodes = not a good thing, but the same thing could be said for too many volumes in a manga series.

I have watched many series that were longer then 26 episodes and loved them. I would cry if they tried to cram Kyou Kara Maou into 26 episodes. Tsubasa Chronicles, D. Gray-man, Whistle, Saiunkoku, Honey & Clover, Fullmetal Alchemist, Getbackers, and Eyeshield are all series that are longer then 26 episodes that are worth watching (I'm counting second seasons as one whole series).

I don't think a series should automatically be written off based on the number of episodes in the series. I will definately agree that the longer series can start to get dull, but they can still be addicting and enjoyable to watch if the characters are interesting enough.

I mentioned Prince of Tennis in my first post because the story IS dull. But the fans watch it because they love the many, many characters, all of which have unique personalities and are brought to life quite nicely. It's definately NOT the best series ever but it's not the worst either.

There are many i could have included that I've seen most of the ep, but I figure if I missed one I haven't completed it. For instance I've seem almost all Of Full Metal alchemist and the movie I own vols 1, 6, 10-13 and the movie, but there are still some eps in the volumes I don't have that I haven't seen. I saw all but five or six episodes of Eureka 7. and a few others

Yes and no... It was better at the beginning... Later on, the cartooniness sort of built up until it was at nearly unbearable levels (well, unbearable considering they weren't like that to begin with), the weird factor goes through the roof, and the twisted bible references (same guy who made Eva, remember?) kind of got to me a bit, though no worse than Sailormoon in that respect, to be honest... I'm still not QUITE done with it (getting them over netflix, about 4 eps a disc...)

I usually watch 26-episode shows - not because that automatically makes them superior to longer shows, but simply because those are the ones that I usually hear good things about. I think 26 episodes is a good length for an anime - not so long that you're apt to get bored with it or it'll become plot-less, but not so short it feels rushed, either.

That being said, the longest series I've completed is Full Metal Alchemist, with 51 episodes (I've seen the movie, but not the OVAs). I plan to watch longer shows such as Monster, Rurouni Kenshin, and Bleach, but I haven't yet.

Azumanga Daioh and Angelic Layer; both 26 episodes each.

Now I'm pretty much waiting for another series...shorter than Pokemon, that is.
