So just what is dattebayo fansubs?

Postby Kai Robin » Tue Jul 17, 2007 7:17 am

So.....

fansubbers, the masked heroes of anime fandom (sorta) but anyways does anyone have a clue what's with this dattebayo group? I notice now and then in the news updates stuff about "profits this" (profits in a fansub group?) and "if series a doesn't reach x amount of downloads then series b won't be released."

Just curious, I'd asked them myself, but they come across as a really unsociable group.

profits are probably moreso donations to keep the server up and running. That's seen on ALOT of the home pages. With Datte... If it's the same group I'm thinking of, they're on of those "we don't care a show like Naruto licensed or not! We'll keep making subs to go ahead of the series because we rock!" And eventually DO get shut down by the companies themself^^ Once again I THINK it was them that is one of those types of groups.

They just enjoy heavy doses of sarcasm and watching people who don't know Naruto didn't air that week give in to their demands thinking they're not subbing it anymore.

They're not the nicest people in the world, but, hey, welcome to the Internet.

Dattebayo is one of the biggest fansubbing groups on the internet, subbing a variety of series (Naruto and Bleach being the most prominent). As far as I know they wouldn't have a way to obtain profit, so that part confuses me. In regard to requiring a certain number of views, that's just because translators have limited amounts of time and don't want to work on series unless they are fairly popular. I'm guessing they are unsociable because they're big and can get away with it, as well as having to put up with multitudes of fans that can act rather stupid and obnoxious.

Given that I'm no expert, that's about all I know. Did that cover your question?

The profits thing is just a joke. One can't make profits on free fansubs.
And according to their FAQ, they don't accept donations.

Wow... when things like that happen no I wouldn't consider it a "donation". It's like "if we can't pay to fix this, no more subs..." In that case it almost IS like paying to watch stuff subbed by amateurs...

Yeah, I checked out db, in terms of a fansubbing group, there's no way I'd download from them. They're jerks, they lack a useable IRC channel to get their anime, they're jerks... Everything they encode is only available via torrents, which, in my opinion, makes them fail. My suggestion - find another fansubbing group. Shouldn't be hard, there are hundreds out there (and more than one encoding Naruto and Bleach).

There are? Really!??!?! WHERE!?!?! Cause if I knew I wouldn't use dattebayo! All their news posts seem like negative commmentary+"if you asked us about this your BANNED."

in fairness though i do take time to thank fansubbing groups who seem to actually like people, like shinsen, though unfortuntately their not subbing any series I care for right now, :( :thumb:

Taking this to PM, 'cause I think if I continue on this subject I'd be violating CAA rules XD

I honestly doubt there'd be anyone else subbing Naruto or Bleach since they're licensed now. Of course, that makes sense, considering that nicer people wouldn't sub a licensed series.

As for the IRC vs torrents issue, I totally understand and would encourage torrents myself, as it's a much more cost effective method of distribution.

That's correct. On the subject generally, however, unless you want an actual copy of the episodes basically any anime series is quickly uploaded to various video sharing sites. Given that most of us aren't interested in keeping copies of the episodes, this is often sufficient.

Lol, licensing doesn't stop people from subbing anime. There are currently two groups subbing Naruto and Bleach. A group subbing DeathNote got a Cease and Desist order from Viz and still continues to release the series, to my knowledge.

Licensing stops most groups, usually the ones with nice people.
