Darker Than Black

Postby Fish and Chips » Thu Apr 12, 2007 4:15 pm

Anyone else keeping tabs on this series? It's new as of April 2007. Heard about it through Anime Online.
Wikipedia wrote:An inscrutable and abnormal territory, Hell's Gate, appeared and caused Tokyo to lose its original sky. In response to it, people who possessed special abilities appeared. However, the cost of gaining those abilities is that those people lack almost all human emotions. They are able to coldly murder other people and gained the fear of the populace, as well as the name Contractors. In addition, to satisfy their contract they must each fufill a set of specific conditions unique to each Contractor. Intelligence agencies in countries around the world utilize their Contractors to uncover the secrets of Hell's Gate and engage in violent battles of intelligence information.

I've seen the first episode, and it comes off as spy noir meets the Sci-Fi Channel, and in a good way. Anime News Network only has 13 episodes listed "So far," but I should hope the series will last longer than that. It's the sort of Anime that throws you into a scenario already familiar to the characters (some of them, anyway), and leaves the audience to figure it out for themselves as it progresses. At least, that's what I'm reading into this.

Episode 2 is due later tonight on Japanese television.

sounds like a pretty interesting anime. though i can probably guess that it will be quite violent. when more episodes come out, i might look into it. then again, that's very shallow coming from me since i say that i will look into a certain anime, and i rarely ever do.

If the Anime continues with the trends and pacing that it set with the first episode, I don't forsee violence being a major problem, or at least not graphic violence, although some of the things Contractors have to do to satisfy their contracts range from bizarre to unnerving (one man is shown creating a perfectly symetrical line pattern with rocks on a coffee table, whereas another is forcefully breaking his own fingers. Ouch).

I've seen this around, actually, and I like the title. That combined with your recommendation may lead to me trying it out, and if so I'll definitely give my thoughts here.

another big issue could be the negative, or offensive religious material. the series sounds quite dark and could turn out to be very blasphemous...

Innocent until proven guilty, Jon.

Second episode's out, unsubbed, but apparantly continuing my high expectations of the series (according to Memento's reviews).

I've seen the first episode but not the second. It failed to grab me but at the same time it didn't feel like it had really introduced itself properly (and some of the McGuffins do seem potentially interesting), so I'll follow it a bit further before making a decision.

The first two episodes are pretty much one continuous story, so the second picks up some of the slack from the first.

Since my last post I've kept up with the series and enjoyed it overall. However, I am growing somewhat impatient over the continual episodic plots. They are interesting on varying levels, but what I want to know are the more important things about the world in which the anime exists. Hopefully this most recent story arc will be enlightening.

I thought the first six episodes were good (although November 11 should have been a basilisk), but 7 and 8 were sub par. And I still need to watch 9-12.

Since the series just passed the half-way mark, I'm assuming the plot to take a less subtle, more active role. My guess is that Hei's sister is a big deal in this line of thinking.

I'm fine with his power so long as he comes back later and uses it more extensively. This niftiness of his code name makes me forgiving. On a related note, Havoc from those episodes has been my favorite minor character so far.

I am pleased to report that episode 12 was complicated enough that I didn't understand everything. Explanatory plots will soon follow, one would hope. If anyone here did understand everything, I would very much like to speak with you.

They are out. I was mad when all the avi subbers stopped, but a new group did 11 and 12, and another MKV group did HD for 13/14 and it's a really good encode.
