Remastered MGS4 E3 '06 Trailer (Shows Many Technical Improvements)

Postby Omega Amen » Wed Jun 06, 2007 6:33 pm

On the French gaming website, Playfrance.com, they have received and are showing (via Flash video) a remastered version of the famous E3 2006 Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer.

While there is nothing new in terms of scenes or character/story revelations (it is the E3 2006 trailer), in terms of technical progress, there is a lot to smile about for MGS fans and people interested in the MGS4 game.

The first obvious change is that now the frame rate is smooth, and I mean it is silky smooth. Scenes such as the helicopter/graveyard scene, the Metal Gear chase, bullet sparks, crumbling wall/dust particles, and Raiden's fight are now no longer producing any frame rate problems. It is all smooth now.

There are also some other subtle changes that are probably noticeable due to the good frame rate. There are a few instances of the use of motion blur. There seems to be some improvement in lighting effects and real-time shadowing.

Since this site is in Europe and most of us are in North America, I suggest you initially pause the video to let it completely download first before viewing it. If you have still have a video file of the original E3 2006 trailer release, I suggest you also view that again so that the improvements become apparent.

Hopefully, some website will transcode this into a downloadable file, but for now here is where you can view it.

EDIT: Gamevideos.com also has a flash version, but it is at a lower resolution, and the guy mislabeled it as the TGS trailer.

UPDATE: While not Hi-Def, Gametrailers.com has created downloadable files of the trailer.

I want to see a high-def version... Then it can replace my high-def trailers of MGS4...

I hope that they release a downloadable high-def version of this. I would also like to see a side by side comparison. Something like that would realy show what they've done.

If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things."

Well, it is not high-def, but you can download it from Gametrailers.com

Well, the best thing I have seen is this animated gif from NeoGAF. This gif is about a 1.5MB.

It's funny... Everyone says it's improved, but I never noticed a framerate problem in the original (TGS) trailer, but I've noticed frame drop about 3 times already in what I've watched of this trailer... I'm only 4 minutes into it... Once in the cemetary, once on the helicopter, once at another place I can't remember... Everyone says there was a frame drop in the old trailer when the metal-gear like things were climbing the wall, but all I ever saw was a really shaky camera...

So... i'm not getting it... The textures look a bit better, though, which may account for the framerate problems now.

EDIT: I take it back... the scene on the stairs is a lot more tolerable now... It still looks like they just cut back on the shake, though, but I have to admit, the part before it climbs looks smoother... I can't tell if they just slowed the scene down to make it look smoother, or what, but the particle effects look a bit better, too... I hope they keep this up... This is shaping into quite the impressive game visually, I just hope (for the sake of the PS3) this is more MGS3 and less MGS2 (though I personally loved MGS2)
