Hmm...the first one that comes to mind is Meroko, from Full Moon wo Sagashite. There were a number of points in the series that I outright thought I didn't like her at all, but as the series progressed, she became such a dynamic character, and turned out to be very selfless in the end.

The first thing that comes to mind is actually pretty recent. My directors in my school play honored me as the only senior in the play this year (and as the only one to have participated in all the plays that my school has done thus far) and gave me a rose during curtain call.
