Favorite Non-Japanese Animation, Past and Present???

Despite the anti-Disney criticism of a certain friend of mine, I still love the majority of their animated feature films up until the Emperor's New Groove, after which they kinda tapered out.

And please tell me I wasn't the only one here raised on Rankin-Bass. The Flight of Dragons, The Hobbit, The Last Unicorn, and at least one other that escapes my memory, all really good dark fantasy. They also pulled all those claymation Christmas specials ABC Family showcases once a year. Also, Sullivan Bluth Studios; American Tail, and the Secret of NIMH. That's all I'm going to say.

Also, I highly enjoy 20th Century Fox's Anastasia, to the point where I can easily forgive its gross historical errors, and I still think (in the face of public opinion) that Freddie the Frog was still a pretty decent film.

As for shows, the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Animaniacs, Batman - the Animated Series, Looney Toons, Pinky and the Brain, the Real Adventures of Johnny Quest and an assortment of old Disney shows. Of course, that was then. Today, I'd say Futurama and (too a certain degree) the Venture Brothers. And maybe Robot Chicken.

Actually, CG animation takes as much work as "traditional" art and animation. It's just as much art as anything else. It's the same reason finishing lineart in Photoshop is art as much as using paint or colored pencils. Both require skill and hard work.

You can't destroy an artform unless all examples of it cease to exist and no-one practices it. Trust me, traditional animation isn't dead. There are still plenty of people who like 2D animation [in fact, you'll find that the vast majority of people here do]. In fact, many hand-animated shows [Gankutsuou, Zoids, Last Exile, and Fullmetal Alchemist: Conqueror of Shambala come most readily to mind, although there are more] integrate CGI for a new, interesting take on animation. It's neither worse nor better ~ just different.

Besides, if Disney does go to pure CGI [something I doubt] and you can't support that, go elsewhere for animation. That's the way capitalism works ~ a business can only make money on what people will give money for. ^_^

They actually have abandoned their traditonally drawn animation a few years ago but after Pixar and Disney merged John Lasseter (director of Toy Story and a big wig at Pixar) said he wants to try and revive hand-drawn animation again.

That would be Michael Eisner. When Eisner became head of Walt Disney studios in the 1980s, before it's animation "revival" (starting with Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast) he seriously considered doing away entirely with Disney's animation department. It's all about profits and the animation wing wasn't making any at that time. When the hand-drawn animated movies ceased making money they blamed it's 2D style. Yet some of Disney's 3D animated movies that followed weren't doing that good either. So... where does the problem lie then?

I grew up with mostly Disney stuff and a LOT of cartoons, so I have no problem with Western. Heck, they are my first obsessions before anime.

I can't remember them though (except the 90s cartoon version of the European comic Tintin) ; since all of them were swept under the rug of oblivion ever since anime/manga came along. But now, I think I'm beginning to be a tad too saturated of anime and decided to be a casual viewer of all animations shows instead--and ended up becoming currently hooked to this obscure Canadian cartoon Class of the Titans. A Greekified version of shonen anime, minus the wangst.

The Iron Giant (Brad Bird = Genius. Pure, unadulterated genius. This movie is marvelous in some many ways and like NOBODY saw it, though for a couple years there Cartoon Network played this movie every Thanksgiving, which is actually a genius move.)
The Brave Little Toaster (As a child, the song "Worthless" never did anything to me. Now that song makes me cry whenever I hear it.)
The Nightmare Before Christmas (The fact that this movie is associated with gothiness weirds me out, because it's such an uplifting and optimistic movie. Jack is nothing if not the world's biggest optimist.)
