Link's Game Grudge Part II: "The Future of Espionage in '04"

Postby Link Antilles » Sat Feb 28, 2004 11:30 am

Well, last week Metal Gear Solid 2 outnumbered Splinter Cell by 10 to 3 in votes. Myself being one of the three.... Yeah, I do think Snake is one of the coolest Video game Characters, but.... in MGS2 I'm forced to play as Raiden.... meh -_- Anyways, this thread isn't about the past... but of the.... *looks around* FURTURE! Heh, so anyways, which of the following upcoming (hopefully soon) titles will be the definer of the covert game genre in '04? your favorite? or the loser of the five?

Let' s start off with one on the most anticpatted....

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Image
The graphics look excellent, especially for a PS2 title. For a jungle environment, Konami seems to be doing a good job in keeping the variety up in game play and what you can do, like the previous games. At least this is… what I observed from the trailers. Yet, my compliant is... the story seems to be or is absent.... I like the Metal Gear games, because the fact it feels like your in a movie. And the eat to survive thing? I like the variety, but I think it's kinda odd. Though, I know it's gonna be a great game and you play as Snake or Big Boss or someone who looks like Snake and not Raiden. Sadly, for me... I'm gonna have to steal a PS2 for a weekend, when it comes out. There is the possibility for it coming to the X-box or PC... I hope. I’m not gonna get my hopes up though….

Star Craft: Ghost
Image
First of all, this game is gonna be great! Why? Because, Blizzards is making it and it's Star Craft! Those two reasons are good enough for me. O'yeah, you get to play as my personal favorite unit in Star Craft, the Ghost. The graphic look stylish and artistic like most of Blizzard games. Hopefully, it will be released this year and it's for all the systems

Tom Clancy's Pandora Tomorrow
Image
Like Splinter the lightning engine is stunning. The game promises new moves. Though, my complaint in the original game was that the hand-to-hand combat was pathetic. From looks of the trailer, it’s still the same. This is only a minor rant though. The most interesting aspect is the multi-player. Co-op online sounds pretty spiffy to me.

Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes

Image
Of all the games... I'm looking forward to this one the most and it’s right around the corner. This may not be anything new, but just an awesome game. The graphics may not be the best and are a little dated out in the impressiveness area, but it still looks sleek and stylish. The over-the-top cinematics add to the style. So, I don't care what anyone says this game is going to be awesome! And yet again.... No Raiden! O'yeah, I heard they add ed some more tricks to Psycho Mantis. So….. March 9!!!! w00t!

007: Golden Eye 2

Just announced or at least confirmed today. EA has decided to make a sequel to my old favorite... Golden Eye. Personally, I believe this game is gonna fall flat on it's face. O'well we'll see....

Top three I’m looking forward to playing:
1. Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes
2. Star Craft: Ghost
3. Pandora Tomorrow

Aight, your turn..... discuss!

Yup, thats me, the first one to choose run and gun! Don't get me wrong though, I like sneaky-around type games (I loved the two Thief titles for the PC!), its just that I'm more of a action gamer. Love games like Unreal Tornament, Quake 3, Call of Duty, Delta Force (or could that be classed as a sneaky-around game?). Plus I wasn't very interested in the listed titles (apart from the Metal Gear titles) and I've never played Star Craft (although its supposed to be good).

Snake Eater all the way, man... And, I think Kojima would have to be hogtied and bolted to a wall with his mouth sealed shut (ala matrix) for there to not be a story... Remember how they didn't tell us about the whole "Snake 'dies' and enter Raiden" thing in any of the previews for MGS2?

BTW, there should be no argument anymore about Big Boss... Snake wasn't born when this mission takes place. Big boss may have been CALLED snake, though... AT that early time in his life.

Is Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes the same as the first MGS?

The core of the game is fairly the same.....

Differences:

1. Of course, the most noticeable change is the graphics. The graphics are now on par with Metal Gear Solid 2. Some areas are improved from MGS2, others aren't. I mean it’s an Alaskan military base, not much to look at.
2. The script and story is the same, but the voice actors were called back to give it a fresher sound.
3. All of the music has been redone and remixed. Also, the sound effects are greatly improved
4. The game play is completely altered to play like MGS2. You can shoot in first person mode and do all the little special moves like in 2.
5. The cut scenes are extended and reworked. I believe it's around over an extra hours' worth. Bringing the cut scenes time to over 3 hours! The cut scenes are also much more professional, cooler, and movie like than before and even MGS2.
6. Much better AI
7. Several little easter eggs

You mean I'm the only person so far that's voted for SC: Ghost? I think Nova's got a lot of potential, let's just hope that Blizzard does a good job making us love her like we love Kerrigan!

EDIT: Took out my short response to Wiggin's question that wasn't near as helpful as Link's. He must have been writing it at the same time and finished before me.

I voted MGS3. This game looks awesome, and it would be nice to see a prequel type story that answers all of the unresolved questions about Snake and everything else. I just hope the story doesn't get as convoluted at the end as MGS2 did. If any of you completely knew what was going on at the end of that game, kudos to you, because I sure didn't.

I agree Link. Goldeneye 2 will probably fall flat on it's face (gameplay-wise). I still think it will sell a lot of copies based on reputation alone (and the 6 figures of marketing dollars that EA will put up, those won't hurt either). Personally I'm more looking forward to a sequel to Perfect Dark than I am Goldeneye, because Rare owns that license, and there's no question that Rare knows how to make a good game.

I voted for Starcraft: Ghost, because I am a fan of the orignial Starcraft, and the protagonist is the first original one in quite some time. Since Ghosts are snipers, it will be interesting to see how they incorporate that into the game. Then there is the burning question: will you get to call in nukes?

Still, like DrNic, I am much more of a run-and-gun type of gamer. I don't like games that restrict your ammo, or make your sneak around all the time. That is why I am looking forward to The Suffering, which comes out on March 8 (yet is available now on Amazon.com, for some strange reason). You can sneak around, but you also have enough firepower to blast your way through the levels if you choose. That, and it looks like it could be one of the few horror games that is actually scary/disturbing.

Ah, yes the nuke. I haven't heard to much recent news about the game. I know, you can call in, a artillary strike, wraith strike, special abiltiies from the science vessel, com scan, Battlecruiser strike, and of course.... the nuke. *joy*
