Used or New?

Postby Shinja » Tue Jan 30, 2007 10:16 am

so heres a question that i dont think ive seen on here yet. Do you buy your games Used or New.

i allmost allways buy them used unless theyve been reduced down to $20 or less which can be pretty common on older games i got shaddow of the colussus for $20 new!

Blockbuster is one of my favorite places to go for Ps2 games they often have buy 2 get one free, all of my GBA/NES/SNES games tend to come from our local used game store "Games for Less"

anything else i tend to pick up at the EB on the used rack. found MGS2 for $5^^

out of all of my games ive probably only bought 5 of them new and that includes my original NES/SNES games so, how about yall?

Our Blockbuster instead has buy one get the second half price, which isn't too bad.

For buying games, it really varies. I just try to buy for the lowest price possible^^ And well, working in a department store with discounts and other things of the such, I buy games there usually if the price isn't too bad (and during sales, of course). On Boxing Day week (Canada and UK's busiest shopping event of the year, unlike US's Thanksgiving, I believe it is) there was a sale on half price ALL games under 30 dollars, so I pick up a couple of titles^^ As you can expect, they sure went fast!

So yeah, it really depends on the pricing, AND the rarity... I hate trying to look for games AFTER the mass stocking of them runs out, because you never know the chances of finding them used (although I have found some good deals...) But as my rule goes (with an exception or 2 though) I refuse to buy games over $40. It's just a bit too much for one game :/ It's why I haven't gotten anything new for Wii yet, because $60 for ONE game is just out of my price range...

So yeah, I don't mind used games^^ I'm just mad at the Legend of Dragoon my friends gave me :/ They went rough on their disks and have scratches all over and then my 2nd disk decided not to play (and of COURSE I had just gotten into the story and everything, too!) So now I have to go hunting for another one :/ *sigh*...

Depends on the price.

Usually games that cost 30$ new can be found used for half the price in mint condition.

Sometimes used games, and I mean SOMEtimes can be a lot cheaper and work just as well.

The only game that I have purchased new in the last several years was Oblivion for the PC (unless you count EV Nova, which can't be acquired used). It just isn't worth it to pay more than $20 for a game...

Yeah, half the time I hate paying over 30 for a game. Of course, this IS all in Canadian cash, so I guess your 20 would be close to my 30 (the currancy gap is being set apart again...). Really depends on the game, but yeah even ones over 30 I don't too too much.

Usually I buy new, unless there's a compelling reason not to. For example, Legend of Legaia was pretty impossible to find new after my original copy got stolen, so I snagged a used copy as soon as I saw one. But when I was looking for a copy of Dragon Warrior VII for PS1, I had an option to buy a used copy for 30 bucks or a new copy for 80 bucks. I chose the new copy, because 1) I don't trust used copies when I'm buying online, it would be near impossible to return it, and 2) used copies rarely come with the instruction manuals.

I buy a lot of GBA games used for the simple reason that most used cartridge games work fine. You can't scratch them up badly like a disc game.

You know, that's one thign that annoys me when I search on Ebay. Alot of the times ALL you get is the cartrige without a box nor booklet. I dunno, I just like all of it^^ I'm visual, and I'd almost feel ripped off if it didn't come with all the stuff it would originally be with :/ Bugges me enoug hwhen I got a second hand RahXephon volume for cheap, and the pretty booklets they came with was missing (my first thought was "so the person sold the game but... kept the booklet? Ooook...."). I dunno, I just like my stuff altogether^^

I've rarely bought games online, course I'm usually not looking for a particular one. Used at a store you can usually check for the manual before you buy (although I did buy a copy of Neverwinter Nights from EB Games that later I found was missing the CD key....).

This question depends on a couple things with me, but mainly it's about whether I am able to get rid of the game's history. I like playing through them without having extra stuff I didn't earn.

Used, mostly. I very rarely buy a game new unless I REALLY want it (case in point: FFXII was bought on launch day), so I usually buy used games that were really cool a couple years ago (another case in point, I just bought Metroid Prime a couple months ago).

It pretty much depends on the game I'm buying. I bought both FFXII and KH2 new, but I bought Chrono Cross, FFVIII, and FFVII used (even though I ended up with a brand new copy of FFVIII when I realized my first disc was scratched beyond readability XD). Typically, I buy the older (in this case, PSone) games used, and others new. I think the only exception there is Final Fantasy Chronicles, which I got new. I prefer new games, though, as they're less likely to be scratched and usually have the box and instruction booklet.

one thing you should watch out for are GBA games from ebay alot of them are pirated copies, they mostly dont come with a box and allmost never with a book and the easyest way to tell them apart from legit copies are the lack of the Nintendo copyright on the circut board

New games. Always new games. Never used, unless I'm buying it directly from someone else. I just... can't stand buying something and not having them with the booklets and papers and stuff. I mean... opening a brand-new case for the first time has that amazing scent to it. You just can't like... do that to used games!

I can think of the few rare times I've bought a used game from a store. My first was when I bought my first Gameboy in a Baltimore City Pawn Shop. XD I also bought... uh... nope that's it.

The vast majority of games I have bought for myself have been used, although I did recently buy a few PS1 games online in new condition. I've had pretty good luck with my used games, really--I've never gotten anything unusable because of damage, and when I bought FFIV for SNES online, it actually came with the original box and guide booklet.

However, my main reason for buying used games is simply that I am always at least one step behind the latest platforms; I don't buy new games because I don't have new systems.

I've bought used games too many times in the past to know better. I'll always get it new unless there is a darn good reason not to.

Depends on the price. If it's way cheaper used then new, then sure, I'll get it used, but only if it's from GameStop or EBGames.

Funny thing. If you get a used import game from Japan, it comes with the original uncracked case, instruction manual, every single insert, and a clean disk. You nearly can't tell it was ever used.

Buy a used game from America, you get a cracked case, no manual, and a scratched disk.

I even ordered an old Famicom game once and got the original box with instruction manual, inserts, AND the freakin strategy guide.

Oh wow... I would like it there: people who treat their disks all nice-like^^ Guess it's like a cultural thing there too, and maybe also thinking of 3 eps per DVD at $50, then yeah I totally see why they'd take care!

Unless the price difference is significant (i.e. >$15) I'll always go for the new version. It's just not worth the hassle of worrying about the disc being unplayable or anything, and as something of a collector of games, it's nice to have everything complete and in good condition. Not to mention supporting the company that makes the game rather than just the store selling it.

Though if I'm looking for something that just can't be found on store shelves anymore, I'm willing to go the used route, of course. Even then, though, I'll look for a sealed copy if at all possible. It's not bad with cartridge-based games, but used discs... Ugh. I just can't understand how people are able to let discs get in that kind of condition.

Oh, seriously. When I had to replace my copy of Final Fantasy VIII, it looked like someone had rubbed the disc over a cement surface, and the other three discs didn't look much better. It's pretty ridiculous how careless people can be with CDs and other discs. XD;

There is something wrong with the majority of people in this country. I could never let anything I spend $20-50 on get damaged slightly. But people seem to think the disk side is... invincible... or something.
