Final Fantasy Tactics A2

Postby Tenshi no Ai » Mon Jan 15, 2007 10:14 pm

With Tactics coming onto the PSP, I also just discovered that there's yet ANOTHER one coming out... cept this one's a sequel to Tactics Advance. I know alot of people dissliked TA, but I enjoyed it (and plan on buying on day... for cheapish). Found it out on Wiki while browsing, but THIS time, I googled up for some sources, and found some info here.

Being the one other person in the known universe who actually liked Tactics Advance, I find this to be a very good thing. Instead of making gameplay demands that will probably be made without my consent anyway, let me just say I hope they can crank the series up a few notches on the maturity scale (the good sort).

Oh yeah, and quit with the gender confusion and let us name our characters. That would be nice.

Well, that's exciting! I liked FFTA too; the only thing is, I don't have a DS. XD Maybe I'll be able to purchase one by the time it's released, though. XD

While the game is not one of my favorites, I still enjoyed it. I just hope the sequel has new characters. Didn't care much for Marche, Ritz, or Mewt much.

So the world will have THREE games revolving around it. What was the name of the world again?

Ivalice. XD And yeah, I didn't like Mewt much at all. XD Marche was tolerable, and Ritz was ok. My favorite characters are the ones that aren't a part of the main storyline, actually--the viera I have in that game rock. XD

Yeah, I've been meaning to purchase a DS for some time now (Advance Wars, Castlevania, Sonic, etcetera), so maybe this'll be the boost I need to get me on my feet and out price hunting.

I liked Tactics Advance for what it was, but it certainly could have been better. They need to use the Job System from the original Tactics, they need to have characters with a definable gender, and they need to make the game a bit harder. And not have that dumb Law system. I'm really looking forward to this one, though.

Actually, that would be four. Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, and Final Fantasy XII.

I can't say I'm too excited about another FFT game, but if it were say, more like the original FFT in terms of gameplay (DOWN WITH JUDGES) and story, then the game would be much more interesting to play. The addition of the races with their own job classes made the game a little different from the original (all-Viera party FTW), and I would be interested to see them expand upon it (and maybe even include some of the new races from FFXII).

Meh, I found the judges only annoying on occasion. If you play your cards right (not anti-laws), you can actually force battles in your favor. Unless someone on the opposing team has one of those infernal ribbons, they will do nothing that breaks the laws. So basically, if you know what's coming, save your missions for law days that cripple the other side. Worked for me many times.

Also, the ability to be dual-class is very useful (provided its not duel-class Ranger). No white magic? Fine. By night, my white mage is a ninja.

By dual-class, what do you mean exactly? If you mean putting an ability from another class onto your current class, Tactics had that too. Actually, that's the one thing that's practically identical between Tactics and Tactics Advance. Except Tactics didn't have that useless Combo ability...and did TA have a movement ability slot? I don't remember anymore.

While I didn't exactly dislike the game, I had one major complaint with it. It was far too easy(especially compared to FFT), and anything that attempted to come off as hard proved mainly to be annoying.
It didn't help that I got Fire Emblem shortly after, and that game proved to be far more entertaining and challenging to me than FFTA was.

What I mean is how you can have each character master two different classes. Re-using my earlier example, my best party member was trained in both white magic and dual-wielding ninja skills. So if no magic was allowed, she moonlighted as an assassin, but if swords or skills were out of the question, we had a team healer. Of course, if neither was a problem, I just tear through 'em like paper anyway.

And no, I haven't played the original Tactics, but yes, the combo slot was perfectly useless. As long as they continue to carry of dual-classes.

Yes and yes. The only characters you could tell were female without a doubt were the viera. XD

And the Law system. Gyah. I used to understand it...but I picked the game up again a few weeks ago to just mess around and try to finish a few more missions, and I had totally forgotten how to use the cards in the law system--don't they nullify laws in a specific area? Anyways, it's crazy when you can't use one of your strongest characters just because "rapier" is banned or something. XD

I never figured out how to use the anti-law cards, except where the plot demanded it (*cough* Llednar *cough*).

Really? As the game went on I noticed that spells really weren't worth a whole lot, even from a Calculator.

Ninjas + Equip Sword ability pretty much killed anything in one hit...

It does that, but I always preferred the tech aspect of Calculators over the brute force approach. Plus, at times, a couple of calculators can be really useful, especially if you need to stall for time. A pair of calculators is usually enough to lock down an entire field (like when trying to nab all the Genji gear from Marquis Elmdor).

Um...I've played most of vagrant Story and from what I saw it had no ties with the the world of Ivalice. Maybe I never got far enough?

If you include VS that would be five:
-FFT
-FFTA
-FFTA2
-VS
-FF12

Either way I have no idea what you're talking about as far as that goes. Sure VS seemed to have the same setting and environment as well as font used for text boxes, but I still fail to see a connection. Don't get me wrong, if you point some out I will easily believe you, I'm not being arrogant about this.

I second Nate here. FFTA was good for what it was.

However, my pet peeve of the game was that (once again) FFTA defaced the Job System like FFX defaced masculine main characters.

The story was unique and original, but the Job and Judge System made it seem like a bad dub of FFT (in the sense it was a travesty compared to the original, but it could still be found enjoyable.

I never really got into Tactics. I have it for PS1 but I just never got into it.
Maybe I should...

Well, good job proving me wrong.
The only evidence against you is the simple fact you could have edited Wikipedia to say that, but I honestly don't see why you would try to prove me wrong over something as silly as that, so I don't doubt you at all.

Game taking place in Ivalice:

-Final Fantasy Tactics
-Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced
-Vagrant Story
-Final Fantasy XII

Coming Soon:

-Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
-Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced 2

There. Let the irrelevant debate die, please.

Anyways, I look forward to this game. Tactical strategy game + touch screen? I'm there.

We weren't debating. All I said was I didn't see how VS was part of the "Ivalice Alliance" and he showed me how it was. Call it a debate if you want, but if it was one, it already ended. Unless of course, we are talking about different things here.

Unfortunately, I will have nothing to do with this game primarily because it's for DS.

Call me crazy, but if it's for DS why is Advanced in the title?

I'm guessing it's because it's the sequel to FFTA. They can't call it Final Fantasy Tactics 2, because it's not a sequel to Tactics, and they can't really call it Final Fantasy Tactics DS, because that would be confusing to a lot of people (is it an FFT port? Is it a sequel to Tactics? Does it have anything at all to do with FFTA?). The common buyer will recognize FFTA2 as FFTA's sequel; remember, not everyone reads gaming news websites.

At least, that's my theory.

The name is not important. What's important is that they tweek the mistakes of the previous one and make this one even better.

No, in all seriousness, I know what you mean.

Well like I've said, I've found the judges both a hinderance and helpful, so really I'm fine with whatever they decided to do with them, even if it puts more characters out on the streets.

Right. The Jagds are a good example of how Judges can be useful in that game (even if I did use Jagds to rid my party of some of the more superfluous members every once in a while...>_>;; ).

Hey, whatever works. I actually liked the Jagds better because of the challenge. I don't like it when the game holds my hand. Death of a character was a serious concern in Tactics and led to me restarting a fight two or three times. In Tactics Advance it didn't bother me at all. That shouldn't happen.

Tactics Advance needed more levels like the Wiegraf/Velius fight at Riovanes Castle.
