Final Fantasy XII

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

I have a somewhat low opinion of MMOs on a fundamental level, actually. They milk their subscribers for money by absurdly extending the leveling curve and requiring significant amounts of farming or repetitive missions. That's not why I play video games.

Needless to say, you can imagine how I feel about Yiazmat. If that's fun to you I have no problem with it, but I can unequivocally say it would be a huge waste of time for me. Why not give it a trillion HP if it's really that fun? It doesn't take too much to make a game difficult or long (just modifying some numbers), so I value design much more than either of those two, though they are part of it.

Though I do agree it wasn't that long... about three minutes, if I recall. But when I'm fighting a boss I don't want to spend three minutes not doing anything. It isn't even as if I have to fight for my life while I wait for it to become vulnerable; I pretty much just sat there.

No one is making you play a game, it's entirely your choice. If you feel it's a waste of your time, then you can just walk away. Every FF game has things in it that are timesinks and take forever. I have only heard stories, but apparently there was a mob in FF4 that had a 1/256 chance to spawning in a room and a 1/256 chance of dropping the item you need from it.

While MMORPG's milk subscribers for money, the game lasts for far more playtime than any other game. I play FFXI and 3 months cost me $40, how many games do you purchase that last you 3 full months of playtime? I've only purchased 2 PS2 games in the last 4 years because FFXI is all I need to keep entertained.

Thing is that in FF games, they add timesinks, other games just..have nothing in place of them. It's just added content. Though I haven't even fought Yiazmat, I've been emo over getting a Danjuro to drop for months now, lol.

I can't decide if this is too off-topic or if we're skirting the edges in a legitimate way. We can switch to PM if anyone else is annoyed.

And I do, at times (ie Yiazmat). Any activity includes some more enjoyable and less enjoyable parts, so I don't mind some things I find annoying because the overall experience is fun. It isn't as if Perfect Defense ruined the game for me, nor do I think it is that significant. But I still think it's a bad idea.

None, in my case. As I've said, tastes vary and if you enjoy that type of game go ahead. Though I will point out that you could probably find a chess board and set for free and occupy yourself for an infinite amount of time. It's all about preference.

I'm fine with that. If Yiazmat had been a primary boss I would have been irked, but as it is it's not a problem. It isn't as if I'm going to do something optional and then complain about it at length. Similar to the 1/65536 drops... it isn't as if that item is required to finish the game, but it's an added bonus.

In the case of Perfect Defense, however, you run into it plenty in the normal game. The final boss did it twice to me and he was readying a third when I hastened to kill him.

wow, what a difference a few levels and an extra party member can make! I just took on that fat esper again and I kicked his butt. I buffed all my characters with haste and bubble, set my healing gambits to curaja instead of curaga, and made an "ally any: esunaga" gambit and was able to survive. Reddas was a huge help, since his attacks are pretty strong and he combos a lot.

After I got the fat one I went and took on Zalera. Easiest esper fight yet ^^. All you have to do is change your attack gambits to "nearest enemy/party leader's target: Curaja" because Zalera and all her minions are undead. my cure spells killed her minions in one cast and defeated her in only a few minutes. I also tested out the fat esper on her.
