Help me pick a cell phone!

Postby Wave » Thu Dec 28, 2006 3:33 pm

I not shore whether this thread belongs here, or some where else, but I’m putting it here.

Some time in the next couple of days I will be purchasing my first cell phone, and service contract. Considering that most of you have already done this, I thought it would be wise for me to ask you all for advice. Also I thought you could answer a few question I have.

My first question; Witch phone should I buy?

I’m looking into purchasing a smart phone but there kind of expensive. And I really don’t think I knead all the functionality that I would get with one. However I do what a calendar/ scheduling and address book fuctionality that is essey to use, and that I can sync with iCal and Address Book on my Mac. I know that allot of cell phones have this capability but I have not been particularly impressed with the user interface on any of the phones that I have seen. I hate have to press the same key three or four

That’s enough to get the thread started.Any input or advice you cell phone savvy can offer me would be appreciated.

Not only do you live in the same state as me, you use a Mac as well? Sweet.

I would recommend checking the reviews at macaddict.com and see if you can't find anything there, or you could wait until January 9th and go to maclife.com, Mac Addict's next incarnation. While you're at it, go ahead and subscribe to Mac Life since it's the best Mac magazine out there.

Stay away from Verizon and Cingular, their tower agreements with Alltel are pretty bad compared to Sprint who started up in NE back in 1997. Going with Sprint or Alltel direcly will give you coverage to 95% of the state and over 80% of the country if you choose a national plan.

Thanks! I'm currently looking for a job, and I don't know where I will be living. I probably will not be living in Nebraska though.

Hmmm, I think you are not going to get the same answer here.

I had Cingular and I didn't like it. My dad went to Sprint and we both use the phone and we hated it even more then Cingular.

I had more drop calls with Sprint then I did with Cingular phone.

I live in the Southeast and my dad had the Southeast plan with Sprint and there were times that him or me couldn't even call out from the house on the thing.

Sometimes, we would take both phones and the cingular would pick up in places that the sprint wouldn't.

I know that consumer reports did a report on cell phone companies and they rated them all bad really.

The ones they felt were the wrost, was Cingular and Sprint was fair.

They pick Verizon to be the better one.

Right now, I still have my Cingular, but I will be changing soon.

So, its hard to really pick one that you will like.

My friends family uses Cingular and they hate it. They are planning on switching services soon. XD Crazy service providers.

I am going with Sprint, but since my cousin is an executive at Sprint the discount he gives me is the only reason.

Isn't this supposed to be about cell phones themselves and not the providers, or are looking for that as well Wave?

well depending on the provider, you'll have a bit different selection in phones.

don't go with sprint. They drops so many calls. I had cingular and was pretty pleased with it. Few drop calls, you can check your minutes and balance by texting custmer service.

Tmobile is decent too. But if you decided on tmobile, investing in a high quality phone, there cheap ones are liable to break.

Ditto. I have Sprint PCS right now, and my signal is rarely good. XD I hear Verizon is good...It's what I'll be switching to after the Sprint contract is up, at least. XD

I would say Verizon and Cingular are probably the most reliable service providers.

Yah I was mostly asking what phone to buy. I kind of figured that the area that I move to will dictate more or less what the best provider will be. Thanks for all you input though!

Say, can you buy service without getting a contract?

Another question; Can you use any cell phone with any service provider? How do that work?
