Deus Ex

Someone's post in the general forum reminded me of this game. Did anyone else play it, and did you like it as much as I did? I can't wait for the second one to come out.

See what I mean, I'm in a total video game vacuum. I'll just have to play it over the summer. Was it as cool as the first?

The first one was good, but it fell short of it's promise I thought, in that it didn't incorporate enough RPG elements or greater story flexibility. It was still an awesome game.

I've heard a lot of disappointing things about the new one though. The interface seems to be less sophisticated, ultimately altered to make it easier for console gamers. Also, the RPG elements seem to have further reduced (or so I've been told).
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

I've got both. The first is one of my favorite games of all time, and I've never done it myself but you can go through the entire game without killing a single person.

Now as for the second, it's strictly more action. You still have the same very open ended choices as the first, but aside from the biomods there are NO RPG elements whatsoever. If you look at the second as a completely different game that continues the story, it's not that bad. But if you try to view it as a complete followup you're going to get disappointed. Both are pretty good, but the first is far better.

I play the first and the second one. The first was awesome. The second, was a great game, but not on par with the first. My biggest complaint was the poor AI.

Thanks DRD. That's a fairly astute (and succinct) way to put it.

Whoa. That coming from you is a huge compliment in itself. Thanks! :red:

If all the games in the world were Deus Ex and Deus Ex 2, then Deus Ex will get 100 and Deus Ex 2 gets only 50. But in a world where other games exist... it gets high 90s IMO.

I love Deus Ex. I haven't played the newer one, but I heard good and bad things about it. Well... due to the goodness of the original, I have some doubt it'll be better.

And I say again, I love Deus Ex. Perhaps as much as CS.

I've got it. I thought it was pretty good but to be totally honest (please don't hit me for saying this anybody), I didn't like the way it handled very much. I love RPGs and I love Shoot em ups but this hybrid doesn't really hold my interest past the first couple of levels. I do think though, that the game itself was a very good idea and a bold step in a new direction.

Deus Ex rocks! I've played it several times, and the fact that it plays different depending on your style (and what choices you make on distributing skill points/biomods) it plays a bit different for everyone. It's very very big, even though it reuses some levels. On top of that, the game rewards exploration with skill points and such.

I waitlisted the 2nd game and got it the day it was released... and while it's not quite as good as the 1st, it's still a pretty good game. Many fans of the 1st game where disapointed by the dropping off of RPG elements and whatnot, but on it's own it's a pretty good game.

Personally I don't think the interface had to be "dumbed down" for consoles, that was a design issue that Ion Storm should take responsibility. I can show you a half-dozen XBox titles that have fairly complex interfaces, yet work well.

Hopefully they address some of the issues when they finish DX3.
