Square-Enix...did something GOOD?!

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

Yoshitaka Amano was the character designer for I-VI and IX.

Tetsuya Nomura was the character designer for VII, VIII, X, and X-2.

Akihiko Yoshida was the character designer for XII, so don't blame Vaan's character design on Nomura...

I think you should have gotten which game characters he did design before bashing him.

I would also like to reinforce what MasterDias said in that FFX-2 did not "suck." The gameplay was awesome, the dressphere was alot of fun, but yes the girl power stuff was lame and the story wasn't up to par with FFX.

And it's not like everything Squaresoft made back in the mid 90's to 2001 was pure gold either...what about gems like:

Threads of Fate (mediocre at best)
Legend of Mana (barely mediocre)
Chocobo Racing (bad)
Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon 2 (bad)
SaGa Frontier (mediocre)
Ehrgeiz (barely mediocre)
Brave Fencer Musashi (bad)
The Bouncer (mediocre)
Driving Emotion Type-S (mediocre)

Yes I have at one point played every one of them except for Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon 2 which I don't think I need to. So really the ratio of good to bad isn't much different now than it was back then in the 1997-2001 time frame.

Brave Fencer Musashi was actually one of my favorite PS1 games...part of the reason why Samurai Legend made me angry. It was a lousy sequel to a great game.

I remember Chocobo's Dungeon 2...that game was so horrible. XD

And I think the only good thing about Ehrgeiz was the Final Fantasy characters.

Hooray for PSP people!

With this, FFVII: Crisis core , and Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops; it seems PSP time is finally coming.

*looks at a DS* I hate you...

EDIT: By the way, I'd like to say that Nomura's character designs suck. Bring back Amano!

How is it you hate Nomuras designs yet like Yuffie? That's quite the paradox you've created, Nate!

I find Nomura's art superior, actually.

IX's art was too weird for me.

I second Kaemmerite. Brave Fencer Musashi was an excellent game.

I've always found Amano's art to be better. It's much more creative. However, the market desires girly men and Bad-behinds. This is the type of art that Nomura draws.

Awww, I always liked Nomura's designs. XD Sure, the numerous belts made fanarting certain characters ridiculously tough, but what's life without a good challenge every now and again? XD And I actually like Amano's art the least; something about the way he does faces is just bizzare. XD

In early stages of development, the main character (Vaan) was to be "big and tough", but as development continued and targeting demographics were considered, he became more effeminate.

So Square ruined the main character by appealing to the lowest common denominator...the bishie fangirls.

I find it funny that people grudge Nomura for making effeminate characters when Amano's the one who did IX, and therefore Kuja. (Zidane wasn't manly either, for that matter)

Not that I have anything against Amano, I also think his designs were better than Nomura's, but hey..XD;

So if they made all the characters big and macho, they would lose fans? I don't completely buy this, as Final Fantasy is one series that can sell on virtually name alone. After all, out of all of the people who were complaining about the FFXII demo or the change in gameplay, how many do you think bought the game on release? Most of them, probably.
And I've never met anyone who refused to play Final Fantasy because of the art-style... despite all of the complaining about Nomura.

As far as Amano is concerned, he appears to be going to help Sakaguchi/Uematsu/Toriyama over at Mistwalker, but he's also apparantly doing something for Final Fantasy XIII.

Yeah guys, this is about FFT for the PSP. Honestly, what is the point about arguing over opinions of art styles?

I personally find Amano's drawings to be really weird and creepy (assumes he did the disgusting CG opening for the FF5, PS2 rerelease and those scary pencil drawings in the boolet) and I like Nomura's style. That's my opinion and with all due respect, I really don't care what anyone else's is, so let's just drop it.

I like how Square's showing favor to both Sony and Nintendo, and this is certainly amasses good kudos for the PSP. I really should try and get one at some point.

Tom the arguement is not even a arguement so don't worry about it. I like the art styles of X and XII myself the more classic style. I do still think the weirder more abstract art is awesome though.

X's artwork was by Nomura. I think XI's was too, but I'm not sure.

Ah, yes, what about the actual game?

Here is the Final Fantasy Tactics PSP trailer recorded by someone's camera.

The angle is not great (and people walking by occasionally), but I think there is enough that should get Tactics fans really excited for this game. I will be on the lookout for a direct feed trailer.

Enjoy.

Amano also made Vampire Hunter D, in case anyone would find that interesting... Amano's artwork is always very goth, but it translates BEAUTIFULLY into 3d... I really wish I could see Final Fantasy 6 on a next gen system using the original Amano designs a la the PS1 FMV sequences. Miniaturizing the humans to their chibbi forms did lose a lot, including Terra / Tina's hair color...

As for the topic at hand (the FFT game on PSP) this will likely be the SECOND PSP game I get...

As for Nomura's art, the only things that sucked were the costumes in X... They had a good thing with FFVIII's costumes, but they took it about 10 steps too far... *shiver* That game does have HORRIBLE costume designs (except Rikku, Yuna, and Auron)

So I saw the date "September 2007" on the site. Is that an American release date, perhaps? Or do we even know?

Also, does it bug anyone else that they changed Delita's last name from 'Hyral' to 'Herial?' I understand that the translation job in the first FFT wasn't very good, but it will be strange to me to see some of the character's names changed, if they are... I mean, after FF12, I have a feeling many of the Lucavi will have their names changed (ie, Adramelk becomes Adrammelech, Queklain becomes Cuchulain, etc.). I'll be satisfied, though, as long as some of the major characters have at least their first names the same... I better see an Agrias and a Mustadio XD

EDIT: ARGH. Now I have to go play FFT.

You do realize that none of those names, "original" or "altered" you said are even possible in Japanese, right? Rather, the "real" names you gave are just the fan favorites for transliteration, though this seems to go a bit further than alternate transliteration... It's up to the translation group to make the names what they want, unfortunately (I would definitely prefer Aeris to Aerith, but the translation teams changed and that stupid book came out and confused everyone)

I'm just loving the anime cutscenes... If those are all the way through the game, that's going to be just plain awesome...
