Classic Games

There are a few threads here for individual classic games; but, given the vast number of those games, it is highly unlikely that many people will have played the same games as you. Therefore (with inspiration from the Shenmue thread), I'm starting this thread for all classic games, both well-known and obscure.

Anyway, what are your favorite classic games (anything PS1 or earlier, let's say), and why?

Here's mine:

1.Street Fighter Collection (PS)-Three classsic SF games in one, including the exclusive Street Fighter Alpha 2: Gold, which is possibly the best SF title of all time.

2.Gradius 3 (SNES)-Good soundtrack, plus an incredibly intricate weapons system (you get to choose your own ). It also has some interesting themes, like the Easter Island heads (one level is made of them), and, um...space things.

3.Contra (NES)-Classic shooting for two players (the only way to play).

I've limited myself to one per system, and I think that is a good guideline; but you don't have to stick to it.

There is also one great series whose name escapes me. It is a puzzle game for the NES starring a little blue raindrop guy as the main character. He looks for keys and such to get to the next level, moving toward the top of a castle. Does anyone know what that is?

OK in that case...Zelda Ocarina of Time. The best one player game for the N64.

Yes, Ocarina of Time was a great game. I'd like to look back much further at the moment.

Has anyone else played Crystallis? Old game for the Famicom. Since NES emulation is certainly legal now, I see no reason why any gamer with a bit of time on their hands shouldn't play it. Essentially it's an action/rpg (the most popular equivalent would be Kingdom Hearts). It actually has a plot that throws you a few twists (not great ones, but it isn't just dungeon town dungeon town dungeon... etc ad nauseum. And the ending is enough to catch you off guard), and an enjoyable battle system. My only complaint is that the maximum level is 16... I reached it and then just avoided all the enemies in the final dungeons...

You know what they say...see a need, meet a need.

I'll go ahead and add the two SNES Mega Man games. Not that the NES versions weren't good, but I don't like them as much. I especially like Mega Man 9, in which you can play as Mega Man or Bass. It is especially cool when you gain the ability to link up with Treble, allowing Bass to fly and shoot spread shots at will. On top of that, I always like the soundtracks to the Mega Man (Tengu Man's stage is an all-time favorite).

I've beaten Mega Man 1, 2, 6 and Rockman Zero. I would do more, but after playing 6 and 1 I realized they're all the same. I wouldn't have played 2, but I was really bored a particular day...

Meanwhile, glad to see someone else likes Crystallis.

Yup, you guys have taste. Im a bit of a Megaman addict myself. I downloaded MM7 and MMX off the internet. 7 is the best out of the two. I especially like Slashman. He's cool. Yo and good choice cbwing0. Megaman 9 was my personal favourite too, I downloaded that one off the internet a while ago but something happened and I haven't got it now. I'll have to download that again sometime...

I played the first 3 Megaman games at various peoples houses, the NES ones, they were dinamite aswell. I'll have to download them sometime...

NES: Super Mario 1-3 (2 is my favorite), all Megaman (1 being the pick here), Contra, Ones that haven't been metioned yet, Kirby, Kid Icarus, Blaster Master,
SNES: Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, Killer Instinct, Contra III, Earthworm Jim, Tetris Attack, Kirby again, Megaman again, WWF Royal Rumble
Gameboy: Metroid II, all 4 Super Mario Lands (I found a Japanese #4 that to my knowledge wasn't relesed in the US) Harvest Moon II, more Megamans (Megamen???? )
Arcade: Space Invaders, Pacman, Ms. Pacman, Super Pacman, Mr. Do, Mr. Do's Castle, Bank Panic, Defender, Stargate (Defender II), Joust, Galaga, Centipede, Spy Hunter, Street FIghter II, Super Street Fighter II, Aerofighters 1-3, Samuri Shodown 1-3, Terminator II (with the big honkin' light guns).

There are so many that are great in thier own right, whether everybody thinks they are classics or not.

You know, I think that my cousin had that game on his old NES. I remember watching him play it.
I don't think I ever played it myself however.

Man, I'm old -- here's a thread that thinks the SNES is "classic." From my perspective, the SNES is an excellent system but hardly Pre-Cambrian. What happened to the Atari VCS, or the Intellivision, or ColecoVision? (I'll go with the NES as classic, though.)

Myself, I pick:

Intellivision: Burger Time or the Inty-native LocoMotion. Great adaptations of some fun coin-ops.
Atari 2600 (VCS): Kaboom! or River Raid
ColecoVision: well ... at least the hardware was good
Apple II: just not a good system for games, although Buck Rogers was a nice conversion, and Skyfox was okay on it (the Commodore port relied too much on high-res graphics probably because of the Apple version). Note: this does not apply to the Apple IIgs, which *rocks* for games! IIgs Crystal Quest is fun! There's this Tunnels game I can't think of the full name of that has some amazing 3-D courses thanks to clever use of palette registers.
Atari 5200/Atari 8-bit: The original M.U.L.E. played best on the Atari, no question. Star Raiders was good too.
Commodore VIC-20: Any of Jeff Minter's stuff, like Attack of the Mutant Camels or Gridrunner
Commodore 64: I personally adore Zenji ... also Realm of Impossibility, Portal, Toy Bizarre, M.U.L.E. (close second to the Atari version), Scarabaeus, Koronis Rift, Rescue on Fractalus!, The Eidolon ... pretty much *any* Lucasfilm Games title (before they became LucasArts), Defender of the Crown (although the Amiga and IIgs ports had better graphics, the C64 version had more soul and better music), and The Three Stooges (same comment)

Man, there are just so many to choose from.... Castlevania, Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Megaman X, Breath of Fire, Lufia, Sonic, Mario, ect.

Ah, Elite. Good choice! While it was never a game I got majorly into, it had excellent 3-D for the day, and it was strongly influential on a generation of space exploration games. (And available for just about every computer you could think of that mattered. ^^)

My Classic favorites.....

Tetris - I'm glad I never saw this game in a arcade while, growing up....
Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, and Mario RPG - the best freaken' RPGs of all time!
Total Annilation - the best strategy game ever, sadly it wasn't that popular.
StarCraft - if you have a LAN party this game must be there, in my book
Zelda: A Link to the Past - it's impossible to count how many times I've beat this game
Super Metroid - That mother brain scared me when I was little...
Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World - the definition for the word platformer
Mega Man X, X2, and X3 - I was never a fan of the NES Mega Man games, I still liked them, though
Harvest Moon - what's better than farming on you're TV?
SIM City - The other SIM city games are too involved.
Kirby Super Start Deluxe = They need to release this on the GBA

hmm does quake two count as a classic? well maybe considering how long ive lived so far. i loaded them game on my lap top and got hooked on it -again. the stuped computer hardly handles it, even though its only like four years old! anyway i think i still have a sega genisis somewhere. we a saturn ut my stupid cousin traded it in for a Nintendo 64. anyways id could always get to the last level of the first sonic, but how do you defeat the final bad guy?

Oh man... that was my first computer.

What was the name of the side-scrolling shooter game that used the TI's super-excelent voice module? Wanted that game sooooo bad.... but never got it.

Microsurgeon (I really want to redo that some time, got a couple of ideas)
Munchman! (Best pacman clone ever)

Yeah, the TI port of Microsurgeon was well-done. I preferred Intellivision Demon Attack, though (Pandemonium was so much cooler on the Inty for some reason).

Numbermuncher. A relatively lame Pac man clone obviously for learning purposes, but at the time it was the best I had, and I played it when possible. But while we're at it:

I played both of those games, and they were great in their day.

While we're on the subject of computer games, one of my favorites is Escape Velocity for the Mac. It was a sci-fi space game in which you could buy a variety of ships, fight for many different causes, and even conquer entire planets. There were also tons of mods for it, adding many famous sci-fi ships (S.O.L, anyone? ).
