Favorite Miyazaki Film

I've only seen Mononoke, Kiki's Deliver Service, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle all of which I loved, though I'd have to say it's a close one between Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle, I went with the latter.

I voted Castle in the Sky. I tend to waver on which one is my favorite, but...that one's always at the top of the list with me. The main characters are both very endearing, the animation, although almost 20 years old (I think), is STILL amazing, the story line behind Laputa is very interesting, and the badguy is great.

Although part of the reason I like Miyazaki is how often the 'villians' aren't really villanous, which is definately NOT true with CITS.

Laputa: Castle in the Sky (why does everyone forget the first part of the title?) has a lot going for it but I can't put it at the top because the main girl has no backbone and for a Miyazaki movie that's just a strange. I'm not feminist in the least but I don't know... lol

Right now for me.

I like Kiki's Delivery Service and Totoro.

I loved Whisper of the Heart, but it was only writen by Miyazaki.

I may have like Laputa: Castle in the Sky if it wasn't for John Lasseter making a goofball of himself on TCM, when they showed the movie. He really killed the movie for me, after I listen to him and then watch it.

Other Miyazaki flims are ones that I don't like that much. I'm just not a big fan of his work really.

But I say this, just about all of the movie have a great soundtrack.

Eh, personal taste really. I found the others to be bland or just flat out boring. Overall I just find Miyazaki to be, as my boyfriend put it, "the anime equivalent of classical music."

That's interesting because I have found Miyazaki's characters to be wonderfully complex and interesting and the worlds he creates to be enchanting. Then again, I like classical music, too, and would admit they are similar from a certain point of view. They both tell tales on a much deeper level and require more involvement from the audience’s imagination in order to be fully enjoyed than most forms of entertainment today.

Don’t miss read that, I am not saying that the rest are superficial or somehow less valuable, just that different people want different things from their entertainment.

About complexity of characters, I totally agree with termyt. One of the reasons I loved Spirited Away so much is the growth of Chihiro from the beginning to the end. It is subtle and easy to miss, but her growth even extends to the way she views the world, as well as her maturity and strength.

There are so many static characters out there that start out incredibly and end incredibly, but remain the same all the while. In this aspect I am thoroughly impressed with Miyazaki, not only because it is true to life, but also because it is beautiful to see.

...And because they are nostalgic and really quite natural.
I not a big fan of classic music in general (I like a few pieces In the Hall of the Mountain King etc) but I do agree Miyazaki's/Ghibli's stuff is very much 'classical anime.'
I love the incredible emotion in his movies and how he makes you really feel for the characters (whether good or bad), also the healthy dose of imagination a good storytelling helps a great deal.

I normally take it out because
1) that was the R1 release name, and
2) "Laputa" means something not-so-nice in Spanish--something Miyazaki didn't realize when he made the film (he took it from Gulliver's Travels).

I really like all of Miyazaki's films, so it's hard to pin down which one is my favorite. I'll just go with Howl's Moving Castle for now, but I also really like Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and My Neighbor Totoro.

I think Totoro was my very first anime ever(saw it when I was 5 or 6). I actually still enjoy it grealy, so that's my pick.

Nausicaä will probably always be my pick for sentimental reasons, but I think Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle are both fantastic movies. Spirited Away is a great coming-of-age story and Howl’s is full of wonderful and interesting characters.

Its so hard to choose....I like em all. ^^ My favorites i think is Howl's moving Castel and spirited away..But all of them are so good.
