Kanon?

Postby Lynna » Sat Nov 19, 2011 7:12 pm

So, I recently finished Clannad and Clannad: After Story and loved them so much, I was wondering how Kanon compared to them in terms of awesomeness? Also, what is the content like?

Content-wise,
There's no language- none that I remember, at least. Some violence in terms of sword fighting and bruising, and one of the girls was implied to be severely injured when young. One does die. Spiritualisty-wise, there is mention of a shapeshifter, and another seems to be having out-of-body experiences, while another has psychic abilities which we really never see used at all.
All in all, it's quite tame, to be honest, in anime terms. Can't say how it compares to Clannad/Afterstory- Clannad is considered the best of them, and it's really a good idea to give yourself time between watching them because of plot and character similarities.

And there's two versions. The 2002 and the 2006 one. Don't watch the one that was made in 2002.

Anything with eyes that far apart cannot possibly be human.

So only watch the one that was made in 2006 if you decide to watch Kanon.

They're very similar in the look and feel (no surprise). I would say that Clannad and After Story, strangely enough, is less fantastical and more grounded. It also focuses more on friendships and in its best aspect, takes the characters past high school.

On the other hand, I found Kanon to be more fun and I think I'm one of few that felt the female characters in Kanon were more interesting than those in Clannad.

Kanon is my favorite Key series and one of my favorites of all time - I think it's more consistently good than Clannad (which has really high points, but really dull ones as well).

Yeah, it was really good language and content-wise.
There is only about 2 swears in the English dub, I'm not sure about in Japanese. But it's very good.

I loved Kanon! Watched the dub...and have to say it was really well done.
If you have not seen it, go...watch it now. I will tell little about it because spoilers abound, but I will say that it has the best use of "amnesia as a plot device," that I've seen in any story I've seen in my short life.

Kanon is fine and really similar to the non-After Story parts of Clannad. Personally, I characterize Kanon as Clannad without After Story and I do it because I really would have liked Kanon more if it had something to tie it all together. As it is, it's fine, but it does feel like it's just going from one arc to the next instead of being one thread from beginning to end. Admittedly, it's better than Air in that respect and it's probably because KyoAni had so much practice by the time they got to Clannad that they were able to pull that aspect of it off so well.
