Giant Robo is the show you think everyone should watch at least once in their lifetime.

Watching Giant Robo is like when your childhood hero sits next to you on the subway. It is an experience not unlike catching a pop-fly from the stands, and deciding afterward not to get it signed. Put another way, Giant Robo is like taking the first bite of the best sandwich you've ever eaten; however, Giant Robo can also be the time you sat in silence for a full minute because you wanted to.

Giant Robo is that band you always wanted to form back in high school, but never got around to. Giant Robo is the cliff notes version of every opera by Richard Wagner ever, in an alternative history where Wagner frequented the local deli for lunch every day for seventeen years. Giant Robo is like bumping into a stranger in the park, stopping to apologize, then realizing it's your long lost brother. And, only occasionally, Giant Robo is when you blow out the candles, knowing your wish has already come true.

Giant Robo can be said to be like the time you found $20 in an old pair of pants. Giant Robo is the first time you rode a bicycle without your father running alongside. This is because, essentially, Giant Robo is when you turn on the radio in the car, and it's playing exactly the song you wanted to hear. Alternatively, Giant Robo is like fighting your sworn enemy on top of a speeding train.

Sometimes, Giant Robo is like losing a dear friend. Giant Robo is, in many ways, like burying the first pet you ever owned. Giant Robo is when you stop drinking to forget because you don't want to forget. Ever. This could be, in part, because Giant Robo is like the time you changed the channel and caught the last scene of a movie that made you want to watch the rest of the movie, but couldn't remember the title. Giant Robo is the vending machine that gives you two sodas when you only punched in one. Giant Robo is when they throw you out of the casino for winning to much, surrounded on the sidewalk by applauding nuns. Really, Giant Robo is when you win the first game of Solitaire you ever played, and never touch the game again so you can tell everyone you've never lost.

Ultimately, Giant Robo is when that kid on the playground tells you his dad can beat up your dad, and you simply looked him in the eyes and responded "No," and you both knew it was true.

so what is it about

Haven't you been paying attention.

It's about (dun dun duuuh) a Giant Robot.

Well, more specifically, it's about the plot by an organisation of debatable morality who go out to take over the world by sewing fear in the populace. This organisation, Big Fire, is fought by interpol, who use a team of nifty fighters to fight their evil. With them is a young boy Daisaku Kusama who has a oversized robot called Giant Robo to do his bidding. To tell you more would be a cruel way to spoil it.

I loved this show so much I made an AMV about it. Technically, it has some visual spoilers, but nothing you can set a story to.

Original OVA or 2007 tv series?

I've bought Giant Robo, watched it several times, and listened to all my friends who love it, and STILL can't figure out what the big deal is. I mean, I don't think it's bad or anything, I just can't get myself the least bit invested in the characters or the story.

So, I guess what I'm asking is: do they make medications for whatever's wrong with me, or am I just hopelessly screwed up for life?

Kamen Rider is that show that came on very early in the morning on weekdays only.

Watching Kamen Rider is like going to a distant cousin's house for the summer every year, but he moves every fall. Kamen Rider is that on and off friend that lives on the same street as you do. Even when y'all aren't hanging out you can see how he changes as times goes on, and he you. Kamen Rider is that game you made up and none of your friends wanted to play at first, until you made new friends to play it with and then the old ones see the beauty of the game. That time you were writing an essay and were stuck on the spelling of a word. You're struggle becomes audible and finally another student comes to your aid. That student was Kamen Rider.

Kamen Rider is that book you bought knowing the writer wasn't the best. But it meant the world to you. Kamen Rider is that girl you always had a crush on and you were the only one to notice how beautiful she was. Kamen Rider is that movie with the awesome ending that you and everyone else saw coming, except the writers of the script.

That awesome friend you've had since you were a toddler, who always had a secret agenda when the two of you hung out and wasn't there when you needed a friend most. When you go to the mail box and there is a single toy that only the two of you played with in it. Its that same toy that when you and your spouse move into your first house together, you make room for next to your side of the bed. That friend and toy is Kamen Rider.

More people should watch Kamen Rider. And he who reads this post is more people.

This is something that I've been meaning to watch for a while. They have the OVA series for 15 bucks on Rightstuf...I think now would be a good time for me to finally watch this.

I would judge the series by its old and simple art style, but I know better now. I've read 20th Century Boys and I know that SO MUCH can be achieve without shiny artwork.

Actually, regardless of that beautifully written description, I was going to get Giant Robo eventually. Maybe I'll stick it in with my next order of school books. >_>

But, if it turns out to be not as epic as everyone says it is...I dunno, but I'll think of something terrible to do. XD

Goldie I do not know what you are talking about, because Naoki Urasawa's artwork is some of the best out there. XDD I adore his style. XD

Also I still haven't had the chance to watch Giant Robo. And that's a little bit sad.

If you don't like Giant Robo then there is no hope for you.

I also don't get how people think it's any more "corny" than any other anime. It's not corny; it's epic. :<

I think they're saying the original Giant Robo (the one from 1967) is corny. Probably because they're all "Durrrrr it has guys in suits therefore it sucks!" But no. They're wrong. Guys in suits is what makes it awesome and the best version of Giant Robo.

I had ordered this last Friday and expect it in the mail tomorrow along with Tetsujin 28 (another remake), a TV series from 2004 by the same director (I've heard it described as Giant Robo but darker, dealing thematically w/ Japan drying to regain its footing/rediscover itself after WWII).

I have heard Fish talk about this show a ton, with nothing but good things to say; however, I have recently learned something distressing concerning the GR:TDTESS OVA.

So, apparently the story, as originally conceived (not originally, originally, since this is a remake/homeage) by Mr. Imagawa is incomplete. TDTESS is the middle part of a story that was meant to continue....it's sort of the Star Wars: A New Hope of anime.

Will Mr. Imagawa finish GR? According to Daryl Surat in an interview he did w/ Mr. Imagawa, the GR director claims that he will not do anymore GR because it is not popular enough in Japan (the speculation is that GR is not fan service-y enough, excluding the bundled-in Ginrei special), plus he is a bit of a perfectionist and finishing up the story would take a lot out of him. Also, supposedly GR is more popular in America than Japan.

I find this to be, in a word, sad. However, the fact that we don't have more Giant Robo should in no way prevent anyone's (including my own) enjoyment of the Giant Robo we do have. And also there are a couple of similar titles directed by Mr. Imagawa in Tetsujin 28 and Mobile Fighter G Gundam to console us.

I look forward to Giant Robo with much, much anticipation.

What you said is ALMOST correct! The OVA is incomplete and its unlikely they'll finish it. However Imagawa did eventually write a Giant Robo manga but in an alternate universe. (He basically took everything you expected outta a comic called Giant Robo with his name on it and turned it on its head.)

Note: That manga is called Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Burned.

So, I think I'm going to buy this today.

Just so everyone knows, the first couple of episodes are sort of slow, and the episodes do vary in length-- some of them are pretty long, i.e. an hour or so. But hang tough because the ending is so worth it.
