Voices of a Distant Star has a war undertone, but I'd also recommend (if you don't mind mecha too much) Gundam Wing and Gundam Wing Endless Waltz. Both really good, IMHO.

Much of the Gundam series as far as I know. Crest of the Stars and Banner of the Stars are pretty good.

I agree, if you like mecha go with Gundam Wing and Gundam Endless Waltz. Seen Crest of the Stars, thats good too. Can't think of any others I have sen at the moment . . .

Vandread and Full Metal Panic are those types of 'war' animes that contain lots of humour.
