Definitely dubbed, as long as the cvoiceactors do a good job. Is it just me or do we always end up with this conversation?

I prefer dubbed because I'm used to English voices more than Japanese ones.

Is there anyone around here that only likes subbed?

Anime purists, if you will...

I really don't mind subbed that much...but with the dubbed, I feel more attached to the characters. For me, it's the vocal inflexions...like in Trigun, they were 99% right on, so I felt very, very good about the dub. And I do like dub for one reason: Kirby Morrow. (Best voice actor evah!)
If I can help it, I'll try to see both. Some anime I don't think make much sense without the sub....*cough Kenshin cough*.
A truly unique case of sub v. dub, IMO, is Ronin Warriors vs. Yorodien Samurai Troopers. I bought the OAV recently, so I watched both the sub and the dub...what a difference! The meaning of the lines were changed, as were names AND personalities. I wonder how many more anime are like this?

I like both. As long as it sounds good, I have no problems with it. Against subs MS 8th, voice acting is the worst one will hear from Japan. Against dubs, there are a few bad ones out there, but I have noticed that some of them start out poorly and end up with top rate voice acting later on in the dub instead of start bad-end bad. Yeah, I have something against both formats, but that's why I said I like both.

I read up on it a while ago at the AnimeCafe calendar. It's going to be this August from what I saw, but I am not going. I don't have the money and no ride.

Now back on topic. I have met a couple of purists before. Some go as far as only watching the origonal meaning no dubs and no subs.

I generally avoid dubs as much as possible. The English voice acting rarely seems to be up to the quality of the Japanese. I simply find it easier to get the subtitles, and read in the emotion from the sound of the voices at the same time than to put up with some of the English voice talent. Generally I'm a purist when it comes to film.

I can honestly say that it makes not real difference to me. I get just as much enjoyment out of dubs as I do subs - unless voices annoy me - then for that particular anime I'll have a preference.

Although it depends on the anime. There are some dubs that have been good, but I usually prefer uncut subbed versions, because it hasn't been tweaked with or changed much(usually). I mean...I'm not a fan of Sailor Moon at all but it's kind of a shame what DIC did to that show. Man, it was bad. (don't lynch me for mentioning that show please! I was just trying to make a point!)

I like both dubbed and subbed depending on how good the translation is on both ends. In many cases, I prefer subbed, but I like dubs too.

I usually hate dubs that mess take huge liberties with the script like the dub for the Rurouni Kenshin Trust/Betrayal OVAs and Cardcaptor Sakura, unless the original wasn't good to begin with. CCS was already pretty clean to begin with and the changes made to the dub are horrible. The characters are very untrue to the originals and many inoffensive things were changed just for the sake of changing them (please don't lynch me either, I think CCS is pretty clean content wise despite some implied gay overtones). The Kenshin OVAs make attempts to make the dialog sound better with similar words that mean different things. ugh.

I like dubs like those of Spirited Away, the first Tenchi movie, Princess Nine, X TV, Big O, and Cowboy Bebop. Great voice talent and very accurate to the original.

When I watch in subs, I prefer a good translation. The Disney anime DVD subtitles are "good enough", but could be better.

Dubbed is the way to go. its the way it should be,,,, Why???
sure it is horrible when the meaning is distorted due to editing it down for a lower rating. it is also sad when meaning is lost trying to line up with the characters mouth movement.

still, thats what companies are paid to do, make it work. so hope that they do.

anyway, i agree, anime you should watch. truly take in the sights. if you have to read you miss something, even if you are some super speed reader. also i don't really know any japanese. i can't tell if a character has a gangster accent, an old west gunslinger feel to it... you see, we miss so much that the director//writer//creater had in mind when we see subs..

the problem, when companys don't take the time to be faithful to the orginal. so lets all hope companies will start to do a great job as anime slowly becomes more main-stream here in the U. S. and the world. (or learn japanese really well.

as for me, going against the trend, subbed.

because the original voice actors are usually chosen very, VERY carefully in Japan. they are supposed to perfectly synchronous with the animation. i can read what they are saying, hear what they are saying and lastly i can watch my DVDs at 2am without waking my parents up.

while i can listen and watch dubbed, i'd prefer subbed. unless the subbed font takes like half the screen -_-;

I'm suprised there's so much preference for dubs here. At our campus club they're almost never shown (and usually prefaced with an apology if they are!).

Well, a lot of anime fans get sick and tired of anime getting cut or butchered if you will or the dubbing company hiring inferior voice actors.

Although I'm not really much of an expert on voice acting and am not sure if I could tell a good dub from a bad dub.

Definatly subbed.. somehow it doesn't feel like anime if it has some Americans voices over the top

Ocassionally I will prefer the dub... for example, Princess Mononoke had an extremely good dub. Much of the time they just sound really cheesy though

i personally like a lot of the voice actors. show some love people, hehe. but true if i really like a series. i will also watch it in subs to get the full story. i say try it both, but don't be hatin' hehe.

i like David Lucus too, voice actor for Spike from Cowboy Bebop, Shishio (sp?) from Kenshin and so on... i think the little announcer guy on Toonami. you know... sub, dub, luv it all.

I prefer subbed, though I can rarely get it since most of the anime I watch (or should I say watched and will watch since there's really not much on I like now) is televised (because I can't buy much anime due to finances and what people think of me), and that almost ALWAYS means dubbed.

am i the only one who's figured this out?

most of the time, when you get a DVD, you can watch the dubbed version then the original japanese... i do dubbed first so i can study the artwork (in attempts to make mine better) and understand the story, then the original japanese because i love the sound of the language, you get the original voice intonations, futhering your understanding of the story. i say forget subbed because im dyslexic so i cant read quicley enough to keep up. this worked really well when i rented miyazaki's "spritied away", which was good but the japanese version was better (because the emotion portrayed in the japanese actors fit better with what was going on in the movie).

so thats what i do, dubbed then original.

To be honest, I have to make a decision based on each series seperately. Since I often don't get much of a choice, I just go with what I can get. There are disadvantages to both. I'd have to say the deciding factor for me is the voice acting. This is completely regardless of language. Even though they were originally in Japanese, that doesn't mean the Japanese voice acting isn't bad.

Don't worry... that's happened to me like three times...and here I thought Inkhana sounded more like a girl's name than a guy's...

(shrugs) I figured hun - guy. But yeah, I know how the mistaken gender thing goes as well. Nobody has done it to me here that I've noticed, but on other forums, they don't figure Gypsy - girl right away. But yeah, Inkhana sounds pretty girly as well. Again, sorry about that, Majan.

I prefer subbed for many reasons..
1. I like to listen for the Japanese practice.
2. dubbed is usually edited ( I don't like for others to edit good work)
3. It almost always sounds better and looses something in translation when dubbed. ( same way I feel about certain bibles)

as for dubbed.. if it is something I let my kids watch.. I don't want them to have to try and read , etc ..they are too young ... so dubbed is the way to go for the movies I get them.
