Does the Naruto "Leaf" symbol mean more?

My mom was curious to know what the symbol in Naruto is that they wear on their handbands mean. I told her it was just supposed to be a leaf, representing their village, but she assumes it must stand for something demonic or Buddist or something.

I don't know personally, but I assume some of them have more to them. If I remember correct, the Sand Village guy's symbol looks like a lowercase 'i', and the Water village guy's is an eighth note. Of course, I'm not hardcore into the show like some people here are, and they could probably tell you more. But I'd like to know, too.

No, the Water Village I believe were rain drops, and the Sound people had the Eighth Note.

If it looks like a leaf and comes from a leaf village, then it must be a leaf. I know it has a swirl in it, and like 3 specific Pokemon, apparently some radicals have thought that it was the swirly witchcraft symbol (which I didn't even know about until I heard people saying that :/) I won't get too much into it, but NO. They don't use magic, they use chakra which is a... well a very different concept^^ A whole other ideology...

There is no Buddhist symbolism associated with the village's symbols in Naruto - Tenshi no Ai is correct in saying there is no witchcraft or occultic powers utilized in the series. There is, however, a Shinto connection to the hand seals used while preforming jutsu. While I'm pretty sure that the fact that the hand seals correspond to the members of the Chinese zodiac was something that Kishimoto invented, the seals to directly mirror a lot of hand gestures used in kuji-in, a Shinto form of meditation.

The name "Uzumaki Naruto" is itself a pun on whirlpools and spiral-cakes, so that's why there's a lot of spirals in Naruto.

Actually, yes, it does mean more. The meaning of the leaf symbol is explained during the series itself. There is also the obvious point concerning Konoha meaning "Leaf Village."

One basic chakra exercise for ninja of that country was trying to levitate a leaf off their forehead. Evidentally the First Hokage used this with his students while he was founding their village. This technique became associated with the village, and in time many of its shinobi engraved the leaf on their forehead protectors.

Bear in mind, though, that the Japanese definition of 'demon' (Japan being a non Christian based country) has a hoard of entire different meanings other than the common single American definition. ('Minion of Satan')

As a matter of fact, their are multiple words for 'demon', with different meanings each.

This meaning that Naruto doesn't have a literal 'evil spirit' inside of him.
