Thanks for the review! I've been quite interested in this title since its premiere in Japan.
One quick question, though: In browsing through some fansub message boards, I saw a few people who, early on in the series, thought they might be seeing some Shounen-ai undertone developing? Would you agree or disagree with this inferrence?

Those who see shonen-ai in it, are somewhat justified, because
Albert does have a way of being too close to the Count on many occasions, wanting to always hang around him. If it's not the Count, it's Franz. And the more crazier thinking people also attribute a shonen-ai relationship between Franz and Albert, beyond being best friends.
However this is not encouraged by the anime per se. I mean, it's not implied at, not like it would be implied in Yami no Matsuei, for example, such that it's unavoidable. If you don't think about it that way, there's nothing to see. ^^
Hope that helps.

When you say "too close," are we talking physically or emotionally?

Both actually. Personally I never thought that throughout the whole series. It wasn't until I read some fan comment when I was almost done that it even ocurred to me to look at it that way. Of course I am a HUGE fan of the book though so that may have affected my perception of it.
Albert definately likes girls, and he doesn't show any inclination of wanting to become a "couple" with the Count of anything like that. Really it's more that he's obsessed with/a huge fan of the Count. Albert's convinced the Count can do no wrong, and he thinks the Count is unbelievably cool and really looks up to him.
Also Haydee's relationship with the Count is different in the anime then it is in the book. That may be another reason why some of those people think they can come up shonen-ai in the first place.
I love you, Myrrhlynn!
Thanks for the information. That's what I was looking for.

... can we up the sexual content rating on this one... its a little more than a 2. There was the thing with Peppo, and then the count and madame villefort, and then the thing with Madame Danglars and Monsieur Villefort, and then the part with Madame Danglars and Andreas. ^^; I just don't want anyone to be mislead, b/c while the intended rape was the only thing actually showed, there are many things implied/shown ending/shown beginning ect.
there's also the whole thing of Peppo being a guy, not a girl
As for the whole Franz Albert thing, I say guys can be close friends, don't you? You can love a friend as a friend. Shounen ai fans take things all the wrong way >.< It was a beautiful friendship! grr Albert has an obsession with the count, but its not in a romantic way.

There's also a wee bit of nudity in episode 2, with the countess. Nothing detailed is shown though.

Righto, I'll get right on it. It's good that you guys are posting details and stuff in this thread, but if it's something that really needs to be updated in the review, toss me a PM and it'll probably get fixed faster that way. Maybe ... You guys know how I am about keeping up with the review stuff sometimes.

I always wondered how that one detail got passed over initially. But I was kinda chicken to mention it- then later forgot anyway.

Two points of business: that's quite the gravedig, RD! Also. Monte Cristos are probably the best sandwich ever.
