Well, saw the first ep and here's my thoughts on it:

Tons of Christiany imagery and symbolism (specially during the opener). The apple seems VERY suiting... I watched through and thought "well, this looks pretty morbid" :/ But then later on, with the whole idea of Light trying to be this righteous judge-figure it made me realize two things: people are incapable of having such power, because as comments suggest with him going crazy later, even the smartest guy in Japan can be corrupted by his own power, and secondly, I'm glad that the REAL God is the only one that has those sort of judging powers^^ This show is just sort of a glimpse of what people would do if they had something too big like that to handle...

So overall: it is interesting. Although it's kinda morbid like "yeah let's kill all these people this way or that!" the idea of Light's character is amusing...

Death Note has been licensed.

From animenewsservice.com:

11-5-06 (5:34PM EDT)---- Death Note Anime Licensed For America
ANS has learned the Death Note TV animation has been officially licensed for release in the North American market in 2007. We'll leave the actual licensee to properly announce themselves at their preferred time and in their preferred manner. A few things have to come together before that can happen though. Look for some official word in the form of simultaneous / coordinated press releases anywhere from weeks at earliest to months at latest.

Already?! Man I'll have to get it a rent or even buy it when it comes out... Then again, not surprised. Lately people have been pikcing up series REALLY quick, like that Le Chavelier or whatever it's called... the Frenchy sounding one.

Well, I started watching this anime last week, mostly because of all the good things people were saying about it, and also because I wanted to see how a story with the protagonist as the "bad guy" would unfold. Well, I LOVE it. XD I've seen through episode 5; I've got to watch episode 6 tonight. L is SUCH a cool character!
I loved the scene in episode 2 when he started his search for Light. The whole body-double trick he pulled on the broadcast was awesome! Even though I was sure that Lind was a body-double, I still found it incredibly cool when L got all "in your face" about it with Light. XD I loved it!
Anyways, I'm really looking forward to seeing how the remainder of this series unfolds. And yes, the animation and cinematography is amazing! :D

Just got back from an Anime Club meeting where we watched the first six episodes and I've gotta say, I'm impressed. I also really liked the part Radical Dreamer mentioned (all of us watching were just going "Daaaaaaaang" XD ).

I never would have expected a series mostly comprised of talking to interest me this much, but it does. That, and the fact the opening music is really, really cool.

Regarding Radical Dreamer's spoiler: That exchange was what kept me reading the Death Note manga instead of putting it aside. Interesting that it comes so soon in the series.

...I need to actually watch this sometime. Perhaps just via YouTube, to see what it's like.

Older post, but:
Opener as mentioned was way to upbeat for the series.

Strange, as I actually liked it. It may seem a bit too "upbeat" for this kind of show, yes, but it's definetly one of the better openings I've seen in awhile.

I especially like how well-timed the OP is. The part where the glass figure falls to the floor...I find that so cool, for some reason. XD

Am I the only one that thinks it fits perfectly with the series? It's an intense series! It deserves an intense song. Out of curiosity, could you give an example of a song you think would have been better suited to the series? Would it be something like Monster's theme?

At first, I thought Monster's type of theme would have fit well, but after watching it a bit more, I think it's fine. Along with the animation, it really fits, and I've grown to like it quite a lot. :D

Shonen Jump anime tend to have upbeat JPop as openers, no matter the subject matter. Just look at Hikaru no Go (especially the third opening).

I think the Death Note opening is decent enough, although maybe not the best they could have come up with. I would think that they will change the opening halfway through the series anyway.

My favorite part of the opening is the scene that shows Light biting into an apple and then an instant switching over to showing scenes of the investigation team, Watari in front of the L logo, Ray Penbar's body being held by his fiance, and the shinigami.

Overall, I thought the opening was decent. Some of the parts with people quickly moving and Ryuk flying seemed a bit like an action series, but otherwise it was alright. My kudos go to the closing where Light is sitting there and then grins for a fraction of a second. There's something very creepy about that.

Unlike usual, I actually have opions about the voice actors. I think Light's does a good job with making the slight insanity seem realistic (though whether that is a good way to play light is another issue entirely). L's voice struck me as odd, though I should have expected it I suppose, but I'd get used to it. Ryuk's voice, on the other hand... I don't think it fits his character or has any redeeming qualities.

Maybe it could pass as not even having an opener.

I would perfer something that didn't have lyrics though.

yeah. it could be like "Grain" from monster. i thought that was a very good opening theme for monster even though when i first saw it, it was sorta unusual for me.

Anyone noticed how the opening sounds strangely similar to Castlevania at parts? I suppose it makes sense since Konami seems to be involved with the series.

So I watched the two most recent episodes from this today (7 and 8).
Hee, I was so proud of myself for figuring out that the FBI detective had faked her name. XD Of course, I only figured it out after she mentioned finding Kira (rather than saying something suicidal), so maybe I shouldn't be too proud. XD Anyways, I'm having such a fun time watching this anime. Even if it is nothing but dialogue (which I've found has been working rather well, actually), it's so fun to watch L and Light out-smart each other, and they're both so sharp! It really makes the show fun to watch. XD
On a completely unrelated note, I like how L just like...sits around eating ice cream while he's solving cases. XD I found that funny, for some reason.

*bounces back from a quick trip to YouTube*

I have seen the opening and, while the song isn't exactly "Deathnote-y," I thought the song was cool. The images from the opening were great, and the song went well with them, so... yeah, I hereby give this series my approval. Not that it needed it, of course.

I watched all the episodes up to this point (9 eps). My oppinion is it's obviously a sick plot. The main character is quite an atheist existentialist
type (In my oppinion). Basically the dude doesn't care less aboiut anyone and anything but his own A$$ while killing whoever opposes him in the name of "Justice". Seen manga (youtube) up to chapter 60 (skimming through the chapters) so I know what I'm talking about.

Existentialist quite possibly. But an Atheist? The fact that he believes in the shinigami means he's anything BUT Atheist. Maybe you meant not Christian. (Or not <insert moral religion here>)

Sure it's a "sick" plot (more like original) people should realize that the main character is the bad guy; not the good guy.

Well, what you have to understand is that the plot isn't following the "good guy". Light is the protagonist, but protagonists aren't always good. In the case of Death Note, the story follows the "bad guy" (Light). I find it to be an interesting take on storytelling. And yeah, you aren't really supposed to like Light...

On another note entirely, please, don't try to censor your own curse words. Just leave them out next time. :shake:
