Any anime that will live up to my parents expectations? (I doubt it)

Postby Hinata » Mon Oct 02, 2006 7:03 pm

My parents want no sexual crap and very very little language.
Violence and magic is no problem.
I just don't want to watch shows like pokemon and Yougio (Or w/e)
Is there such thing as an anime like this? Thanks for answering my Q.
My parents don't even like the idea of Naruto unless its on cartoonnetwork.

i like one piece, rurouni kenshin is also good, although from what i understand the unedited version on dvd is pretty bloody, pretty much all gundam cartoons are good, i highly recommend gundam wing and mobile suit gundam, something that you may look into is the anime review section in this forum, there are many other members in this forum, who, like yourself, have such standards to adhere to in what they watch on tv

Very No. Episode 9 = ~10 minutes of nudity.

Last Exile's probably one of your safest bets. As a plus, it's also good.

Sure! Watch a Hayoa Miyazaki movie like Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle.

As for actual series, you could always check out Case Closed. It has some murder scenes, but it's fairly clean otherwise. If you want a heaping pile of burning courage, you could check out GaoGaiGar. It's one of those giant robot shows, but it's very clean.

Voices of a Distant Star and The Place Promised in Our Early Days are both very excellent films you could check out, as well.

You're correct, though the reason I forgot that episode is that you can probably skip it entirely and not miss anything important to the plot. That was one of a couple "The Paper Sisters do odd jobs for Dokusensha to kill time between the beginning arc and the main storyline" episodes.

I should also point out that it's possible some people would have a problem with the opening credit sequence, which includes a nude woman with red painted writing on her body.

Last Exile's probably one of your safest bets. As a plus, it's also good.

That should work.

Some Shows I thought of ...

Postby Geirr » Mon Oct 02, 2006 9:25 pm

My wife & I have been watching various anime for 5 - 6 yrs. We always watch sub and never dub; our Japanese is getting to the point that we are able to make it through a few raws as well. So we can't vouch for smutty English translations of otherwise non-swearing Japanese. (The Japanese language does interesting grammatical things, so otherwise their words for [s...] don't have the shocking effect that the s-word has in English and American culture. As a sidelight, half my family is from Quebec, where in French you could say 'm_rde' to your grandmother if that's what you saw the puppy just drop onto the carpet, but throw the right bunch of Catholic words together and them's fightin' words - and you might embarras a taxi driver.)

Assuming that your parents would be OK with some form-fitting costumes such as flightsuits, or shows where adult women have some figures -BUT- fabric stays where it's supposed to, and while some motion may be realistic, it's not exaggerated or gratuitous, then offhand, I can think of the following:
(TITLES IN CAPS.)

LAST EXILE - One teeny moment where the main boy character gets a glimpse (and he is properly embarrased) But the rest of the story (26 eps) has no 'service' at all. Also, there's no magic (it's not part of the story.)

KENRAN BUTOHSAI / MARS DAYBREAK - SF story with some mecha and surface vessels in combat underwater at times. (Large oceans on Mars? Relax & Enjoy the show.) One instance in one ep (out of 26) in which girls discuss figures while around a pool, with one gratuitous jiggle. Most of the women are wearing modest one-piece suits. A pirate submarine story.
Some form-fitting uniforms.

VICTORIAN ROMANCE EMMA - This was almost made as a backslap to all those silly 'mei-do' shows popping out in the past few years. The setting is real, no-magic 19th century England and it is the most realistic depiction of the daily life of an English maidservant that I have ever seen on video. It's also a story of an improbable romance between the young scion of a wealthy industrialist family and the maid. There was some interplay with the UK and India, and without spoiling any plots, the town receives a visit from a high-born Indian. His retenue of servants are realistically clad - they don't take the center of the camera's attention for long - and nothing illicit is seen or shown. Well - let's just mention the word 'gossamer,' as a caution.

PIANO - Clean as a whistle. A girl struggling with her piano lessons as her opening recital approaches. Can she muster the discipline to attain her dream, master the instrument with skill, yet also unleash the expressive power of the music she hears within her?

ANGELIC LAYER - Possibly. I saw this one a while ago and can't remember everything. I seem to recall that the battle-dolls are represented as a kind of technology, rather than magic. They do not have souls, and their emotional expressions seem to be exactly those of the human who is 'driving' them.
I seem to remember some form-fitting costumes and even some outlandish ones, but I do not recall any excess bouncy-bouncy, or illicit exposure. (Could someone get confirmation on this?) I remember not liking how one girl tends to hit the main boy character a lot when she gets excited.

THE SILENT SERVICE (OVA) A Japanese submarine declares itself a mobile, sovereign entity, in a bid to force American and Japanese naval forces to negotiate world peace - if only every side can trust that the others will also remove their hands from the triggers! No magic or sex.

PALE COCOON (AOI TAMAGO): Short OVA. A somewhat bleak SF story, but no magic, sex, or violence that I recall. Breathtaking futuristic CGI settings.

UCHUU NO STELLVIA: Space-based science fiction. Some form fitting deck-wear, a few wild hair-do's, some aliens, but IIRC no excess 'bounce,' or illicit exposure. Same goes for STARSHIP OPERATORS, which has no aliens.

AVENGER: Made by most of the same gang who made .hack\\SIGN, Madlax, and Noir. Except it's only 13 eps long. Set on Mars, this story has more of a Mad-Max 2 or 3 feel to it. No magic, althought the dwindling number of humans have all become infertile and no one is sure why. The human dwellers on Mars have built large numbers of androids/cyborgs which look and speak like children, for companionship and an attempt at family life.
One day - could it be!?! - a child seems to have been born natually, and becomes the focus of kidnap attempts & escapes.

CREST / BANNER OF THE STARS: With the exeption of one 1st season ep in which the almost-human aliens called Abh explain their reproductive cycle (and the female doing this doesn't realize she LOOKS suggestive) the rest of the three seasons worht of story are classic 30's space opera: Massive fleets, star empires, stratagems, etc. Very formal Japanese the higher you get up in the Abh command structure and the higher up in the royal family. No magic.

Also lastly, IIRC none of these series abuse Christian religious symbols, and nor do they include bizarre or occult rites, or pagan, Satanic, or other symbols.

Definitely not the old Giant Robo dub, because it has a lot of swearing. The subs are clean, though, as is the rest of the series. Really good, too.

And don't watch Wolf's Rain, because it is terrible.

Another suggestion might be Fullmetal Alchemist. I don't believe it has much bad language, and doesn't really have any sexual content.

Full Metal Alchemist DOES have language in it. Like my sister says, there's only language in fits of anger, but then I reply, the main character of the show is VERY short-tempered.

Amd Wolf's Rain might have too much sexual content and/or language.

You could always look through the reviews here on CAA and see if you find anything suitable and enjoyable.

not to mention in FMA the main character is athiest. other than that its really not a bad show.

anyways Kodocha is another great show. it has no nudity in it that i can recall and only the occasional cuss word. its a great show to get into. not to mention its a long series so it would take you a while to get through it.

also all of myazaki's works are great.

To answer a previous question, yes _Silent Service_ is available in the states, as a very good dub. (I have it on tape.) Or anyway, it _was_ available. I forget who distrubuted it (I seem to recall it's "Manga Video". In which case the promos for other anime are probably worse than the actual movie itself... {wry g}) Can't absolutely swear there's no bad language at all in it; but I think I can swear that it isn't absolutely filled with swearing... {g} (Reminds me, I want to watch it again soon anyway...)

Anyway, very thoughtful, tense, entertaining movie--much like a Tom Clancy story gone anime.
this message has been brought to you by
Bittersea Publications
in the owner's spare time {g!}

"For all shall be salted with fire. Salt is good, but if the salt becomes unsalty, with what will you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another." -- Mark 9:49-50 (my candidate for most important overlooked verse in Scripture. {g})

"We must
be strong and brave--
our home
we've got to save!

We must make
the fighting cease,
so Mother Earth
will be at peace!

Through all the fire and the smoke,
we will never give up hope:
if we can win,
the Earth will survive--
we'll keep peace alive!" -- from the English lyrics to the closing theme of _Space Battleship Yamato_

"It _was_ harsh. Mirei didn't have anything that would soften it either." -- the surprisingly astute (I might even call it inspired {s!}) theological conclusion to Marie Brennan's _Doppleganger_ (Warner-Aspect, April 2006)

Saint Tail (OK, the dub stinks because they removed referances to God, but the sub is fine.)
Tiny Snowfairy Sugar
Witch Hunter Robin would be hit or miss.
I thought .hack//SIGN was tame, but your parents might take issue with some of the costumes on players.

That's all I can think of off of the top of my head.

Ditto. The anime is practically spotless language and sex-wise, though the manga has a little bit more objectionable content. Check the manga review section for details.

Another suggestion I have is Magic Knight Rayearth. No sex whatsoever, and it's a very good, clean series.

For manga, Yotsuba&!. Yotsuba&!, Yotsuba&!, Yotsuba&!. Probably one of the most squeaky-clean series I've read. It's also incredibly funny.

Haibane Renmei is another good one. I don't remember any language, and I know there's no sex. It's a very, very good series.

For Miyazaki movies you should be able to watch, I suggest Spirited Away, Whisper of the Heart, Castle in the Sky, and Howl's Moving Castle. All of them are quite good.

Anyways, hope that helps a bit! I'll post more if I think of them! :thumb:

Not the case with the OVA; that has some nearly-full frontal. Also some blood. (It's also "blasphmy" if you've seen any of the actual series.)

And I highly recommend any Miyazaki cartoon, since they have no problems with magic.

i might warn you tho if you watch Pom Pocco (one of myazaki's works) they do get a bit descriptive on the male racoons. they dont do it in a perverted way or anything but it is still something you might watch out for. other than that the rest of myazaki's films i would recommend.

I don't know if there's a US edit (such as the US version of Tenchi in which they drew a swimsuit over Ryoko in a certain onsen scene..) - BUT- Gash-Bell ep1 included a naked baby boy, full frontal with, shall we say, "more detail of the crown jewels than we ever wanted to see on TV."

More explicit than Miyazaki's tanuki critters, and we bailed on Gash-Bell that series at that moment.

There may be a US-edit vbersion which clipped it out, but JUST A warning if you are watching a Japan-produced Region 2 DVD or fansubs, You may be in for a revolting surprise.

Incidenallty in Japan the Tanuki statues outside izakayas and other "watering holes" are often similarly 'endowed.'

Trigun has pretty much no sexual content or magic...but It does have a fair amount of language.
Ruroni Kenshin (TV) is pretty clean.
Some Gundam stuff is clean
