Iria - Zeiram the Animation

Postby Gypsy » Tue Jun 03, 2003 8:09 am

Curious to see if anyone else has seen this older (but awesome) anime series and what they thought. I have a review kicking around for it somewhere, but I haven't brought it over yet.

Hmm...yes as a matter of fact I have seen all of Iria...I to be honost...was impressed. I will be honost, I have not seen lots of anime....from what I have seen I am annoyed by childish stuff....nudity, and other crap...I will say that Iria is more adult slanted without breasts flying everywhere and horrible language...yes there is violence...but not nasty IMO. I loved the animation for some reason....I liked how it looked. Not a long anime either....I watched it all in 2 sittings. So...yeah...I would give it 4/5....because I have not yet found an anime i love so much that I would give it a 5/5. :thumb:

How long's this thread been here?!
An extremely gracious and patient gypsy girl lent Iria to me, and while it took a while to get into the story (mostly me trying to keep up), I really really loved it. The animation was remarkable, especially for it's time. I wish I could say I saw it all in one setting, but in truth it took me months of snatches and then finally one big long haul a few weeks back. And yeah, I have to agree with Shatterheart, the violence is not nasty. It was refreshing to see an anime without---as Shatterheart put it--"breasts flying everywhere and horrible language". I give it a thumbs up too! :thumb:

Complete Review

Postby Gypsy » Thu Jun 05, 2003 3:00 pm

This is my old review from the old boards

Iria – Zeiram the Animation (6 Episode miniseries)

Genre: Sci-fi/action

Iria is an apprentice to her big brother, Gren, the bounty hunter. Iria followed him on a mission that would change both of their lives forever. What started out to be the simple rescue of the crew of the Karma (a spaceship) turned out to be stopping the entire human race from being annihilated. (How typical of anime) On board the ship is an invincible life form – a Zeiram. This creature wants to do nothing except kill and clone its victims. Gren sends Iria off the Karma, then blows the ship up with him and Zeiram inside. Iria crashes to a planet and meets two street kids. Meanwhile, a falling star is headed right towards them . . .

Positive Points: The animation is spectacular. The character designs, environment, and culture are all very rich. The main character, Iria, must learn responsibility as she has gone from protected one to protector.

Negative Points: Some of the dubbing is kinda crappy, like they will repeat themselves a couple times, or say something right out of the blue that doesn’t pertain to anything. There are also two cases of "implied nudity." You know, like on soap commercials, they just barely cover up in time kind of thing. - I think - to be honest, I never watched close enough to see if they actually showed something. The possiblity is there. Also, there is one bare bum shot.

Spiritual Content: None either way.

Sexual Content: The a-for mentioned wrinkles in an otherwise almost perfect anime

Language: Mild, milder than a lot of PG movies.

Violence: The villian is a really creepy guy that loves carnage. Of course there is violence. Where it is not overly gory, blood does fly around on a few points and is prone to be seen in large puddles on the floor.

Summary: If you are in the mood to be thoroughly impressed with a beautiful (yet short) anime, watch Iria at all costs. Because of the two stray, off colored comments, the shower scenes, and the blood, I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone under, well, thirteen.

Rating: PG-13

**** 4/5

Sorry to bump the thread, but i've seen this anime. It's rather gory, but it had a REALLY spiffy plot. Has anyone seen the live action Japanese movie they based it off?

I also like this anime (in fact I own it). I first saw it on the Sci-Fi channel...it was one of my first experiences with anime, so maybe I like it a little more than its merits warrant; then again, it is really good.

I have watched it in one sitting, although I have also seen it in two, since the Sci-Fi channel ran it over two days.

Iria: Zeiram the Animation has a good plot, as well as a fair number of tense moments, especially when Iria (or others) are fighting with Zeiram, because you want them to win, but Zeiram is more or less indestructible.

It is also similar to Outlaw Star in some ways.

Yeah, I think we're in the same boat. Iria is always going to be high on my favorites list, because it was one of my first. To bad it was such a short series. It had it had a very open plot line. I think a series with an older Kei as a sidekick would be fun.
