Good anime, bad official art

I love the show Onegai Teacher... It has a good deal of fanservice, too much for some people, but I love it... (the show, not the fanservice) The show deals with good issues, and deals with them better than American TV shows do. It has a surprisingly heartwarming plot, and the main 12 episodes end rather well... (no comment on the 13th... It was really unnecissary.) It's really sad that it had to be tainted by that fanservice...

I have been looking for any sort of official stuff on Teacher, and I realize why so many people here hold such a strong objection to it without even watching it: The official art is much more fanservicy than the show ever gets... Who's to know why they held back, but the official art makes it look like some sort of sex anime. Shots of open shirts and underwear and all sorts of things that were never in the show... (not to mention that the shots from the show are all the fanservice ones...)

Why does this happen? The extended sountrack for Silent Hill 3 featured a picture of Heather with her shirt unbuttoned, no bra, but she dresses rather conservatively throughout the game... I wonder why it is often so different in the secondary art than it is in the actual product? Are they just trying to catch people's eyes? Do they think they'll draw more people if they tempt them with that, and then spring the actual plot on them when they've been trapped?

I've seen similar things in Nadesico too... Probably others, but I can't think of them right now... I just don't get it...

I've read many manga's where the omake contains a ton of fanserve. It makes me so mad that I usually cut those pages out and tear them to sherds. In fact, I was just going to make a thread about it in "Manga Mania", but I've been spared the trouble...
I guess its what you said, to lure readers into it. However, for me that was just about enough to throw the whole manga book away because I felt like I'd really been let down by the artists. But then, most mangas and animes aren't trying to appeal to a conservative audience.

This could have been a nice little series except for the fanservice. I was not really happy with the lustful uncle or the pre-marital relationship between two of the characters. Overall, there were just too many sexual overtones for my taste.

I think it's just to draw people in. It's a shame though. I would be embaressed to buy it, even if the series itself was okay.

Hmm, while it's not the topic of this thread, I do sorta like how they treated the situation between the redhead girl and that loud guy. Unlike if it were on most American TV shows, it wasn't shown to be "no big deal." It was something that had a drastic effect on their lives and put them through a lot of anguish... Until that stupid 13th ep, but like I said, it's better to ignore that one alltogether.

As for the Unlce, well... I guess I know enough people like that in real life, and have been watching old shows like "I Love Lucy" where something like that is a secondary theme (Fred and Ricky often wander though it never goes anywhere.) He didn't really bother me, but it is a matter of taste and personal conviction.

EDIT: I should say, though, that while the Uncle didn't bother me, the (alien) Mother did... She's the worst part in the show, and I was glad when she didn't play a role anymore. (I think she was in 2 eps plus the 13th one) END EDIT

The thing is that people that could deal with what is in the show get an even worse impression from the official art, which is what bugs me. I do understand that the show itself is too much for some here, which is why I'm carefull who I show it to.

This doesn't happen merely in shows that have that level of fanservice to begin with, though. Silent Hill 3(rated M for violence, by the way, and disturbing scenery) has no fanservice at all, unless you're going to get anal and say that the mere fact she's wearing a rather short skirt is fanservice... Nothing is tight, there's never any "views" or convenient angles or sexual anything in SH3, but the art on the soundtrack doesn't demonstrate that.

Anyhow, I guess i don't have anything more to say that won't be repeating myself.

I hate it when this happens. It's just reinforces the bad rap manga and anime already have. Like, if you look at the first volume of noir-- the back features a picture of Mirielle in a bikini. In the show, she wears it for-- like ten seconds and they put it on the back? AHHHH!!!!
