Going to best buy: need anime suggestions

I'm going to Best Buy tommorrow. I'm going to get Voices of a Distant Star but I also want to get a start on an anime serie(s). I've mostly done one shot stuff in the past but I'm ready to move on.

Okay, so here's the criteria:

I don't mind (as I've said in the past) non-graphic, Lord of the Rings style violence. I don't really mind language (because I've got a TV Guardian, so that's really not an issue at all.) I do mind sex. I'm trying to steer clearly away from that.

Suggestions anyone?

Well Record of Lodoss War is pretty close to Lord of the Rings Style violence. I also personally recommend Trigun and Rurouni Kenshin (make sure it's the tv series because the OVA has very graffic violence). Check out the reviews too and see what looks good.

My recent purchases will look pretty lame, but they have kept me laughing...

I would suggest Galaxy Angel (Volume 1 just out), Happy Lesson (2 volumes of this series now out) or Super Gals (5 volumes now out).

On a more serious side I've been watching Figure 17 which has been overlooked by many. It's very slow paced but if you want something that really looks at day by day life in rual Japan it's very interesting.

For mangafanatic, I'd recommend Angelic Layer and .Hack//SIGN. I just finished buying the .Hack//SIGN series myself, and am in the middle of buying the Angelic Layer series, and I'm very pleased with both. .Hack//SIGN is too slow-moving for some, but I enjoy the deep storyline and character development, and if you're looking for the RPG element it's definitely there. Angelic Layer is a wonderful, feel-good anime that is very clean. There is an excellent review of it here on the site. If I had to recommend one, I'd say Angelic Layer. Are you looking for the fantasy genre, or any genre in particular?

As for you, Viking, I would definitely recommend The Vision of Escaflowne series, if you haven't seen it yet. I'm not sure if they offer a boxset or not. It is my second favorite (very close to my favorite) anime series of all time.

Rev. Doc, I'd second that opinion on Figure 17. I rented the first volume and really enjoyed it. And Galaxy Angel is going to be one of my next purchases.

If you enjoyed Ranma, you'll laugh your head off at Urusei Yatsura. It's not widely available in most stores, and AnimEigo is starting to phase out their early box sets, so get 'em while they're hot from http://www.animeigo.com.

Also, as a general suggestion, I rather liked the Oh! My Goddess (note: it's not sold as Ah!) OAVs, which AnimEigo also releases. It's only five episodes on two discs, and relatively inexpensive, so it's worth picking up. The plot, to quote the Anime Encyclopedia, is "sugary enough to rot teeth" but it's still so kawaii!

So .hack is okay, hm? I've been pondering that one, but you never know what you'll get with anime. I was also admiring some adorable art from figure 17 so maybe I'll grab that this time. Well, I'll consider EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING anyone wants to add to my list thus far. Maybe I'll get up really early before I have to leave (bleh. . .) and see if there's more. I am in desperate need of anime library. Mine's all miyzaki kid's movies. Not bad, but definitely not good either.

If you like Miyazaki you can try some of Ghibli's more adult real world anime, like Only Yesterday, I Can Hear the Sea, and Whispers of the Heart. On second thought, I doubt you'll find those at Best Buy.
