What is the box of public memberships for?

For the life of me I can't seem to figure out what it is. In case you don't know what I'm talking about, I mean that box that is in the bottom right hand corner of each profile.
I've always been curious as to what it was and what its purpose is.
EDIT: Woops, I meant to say group memberships.

I think it's a leftover. This is a format made by VBulletin. On some of the other forums this format is used on, you can join groups as well. Catholic Answers's forum is a good example of this.

Another forum I'm a member of (composersforum.ning.com, for music composers) uses groups to have threads dedicated to members of specific interests (like different genres, or there's one group for 'full-time' composers, i.e. people who actually make their living off it.)
It's hard to figure what CAA might use them for. Perhaps for collaborations or role-playing.

Group memberships is a secret society of older elders of CAA that feast on probies and planning to take over the world.

Oh yes, I remember someone mentioning these higher elders or at least something along these lines. Who was it that said it again?

*clears throat* Roy, have you forgotten that one of the main rules of the society is not to mention the society!?
