Printer issues

Okay, here's one for you computer guys. I know next to nothing about them. I have an HP Photosmart 1000 printer that my bro gave me cuz he doesn't use it anymore. It's plugged into the computer and ready to go, but whenever I try to print anything it doesn't work. I went to the control panel and clicked "add printer", but whenever i look up the list of HP printers on the menu, mine doesn't appear there. I think my bro lost the disk as it's nowhere to be found. Can I still get it to print without the disk? Thanks in advance.
