For normal PS-style operations, you can try the GIMP or Pixia, both free...^^ It kind of depends on what you want to do though. If you want to color, those will both be sufficient. For image processing, you may want to use another program like Irfanview.

PS is great for special effects... probably the best. Photo Shop Pro is kewl too, but lately it's been loosing it's fanbase and I'll admit that I didn't find it quite as good.

And it's easy to find on the used market since it's so common. Even an old copy of Photoshop will still get you pretty good mileage. I bought PS7 and haven't really seen any need to upgrade to CS or CS2. Even PS6 might be enough for you, and that's pretty inexpensive used.

I agree. I used CS at work, and other than some minor tools and some higher end functions that aren't needed for digital art (like the recording feature, which is cool, but only if you have to edit a batch of image sequences). Then I'd go home and use PS7, and I was fine. In fact, I still use 7. To be honest, CS had some rather nasty bugs that crashed the program quite often. Hopefully CS2 changed that.

It doesn't really help anything in a topic to post the same thing *three* times. I think Ink and frwl's original posts were more than sufficient.
