Troubles making avatar for CAA...

I don't consider myself a computer dunce, but I just can't make an avatar small enough to display nicely here! I've tried for 2 days to crop an image small enough, THEN to get it so it was less than 14.6 KB, and still make it look decent. (Which my current one certainly does not! ;)) How are you guys getting something that is small and still nice looking?? I'm using photoshop and cropping the image and saving it at 72 ppi and at low (1) resolution... I can't seem to make it lower than 15.4 K and still look like something you will be able to recognize. Any suggestions?

I'm not personally familiar with photoshop, but have you tried / can you decrease the color depth? If you can reduce the colors to 256 (.gif amount of colors), you will greatly decrease the size. Your pic probably doesn't need all 16 million colors a .jpg can hold to look good, anyway.

Thanks, termyte! I tried your suggestion, which actually led me to an even easier solution! Problem solved... thank you! (Don't know if anyone around here cares for G Gundam, but I loooove that Burning Gundam! ;))

If you have photoshop, sam*ron, you can open your image then save it again using "Save as Web Image" (under "File") ... on mine, it automatically changed the image to fewer colors and lower resolution, but somehow it still looks okay when I post it here.
