Getting a part time grafics related job?

Postby Uriah » Fri Mar 04, 2005 6:10 pm

I'm thinking about my job possiblities.

I thought it would be cool to get a part time job at a sign making place or something, but I have no idea what the general requirements are to get hired. I'm only 16, but I know my way around photoshop fairly well, and took a college grafics design class over the summer (Passed with an A)..

Sooo.. does anyone here know what is generally required to be hired at such a place? College degrees, ect?

Thanks in advance.

hmmm, well most places I see job adds for want you to know photoshop, Illustrator or freehand, and quark, primarily. Sometimes they want pagemaker, powerpoint and some other junk too. But I think if you already know photoshop and you want a job in a generic graphics place like that, learn Quark and one of the vector drawing programs (vector especially for a sign shop, maybe even a typography or 2D design class would help).

If you're strong in Quark, Illustrator/Freehand and the creation of layouts for printing, they'll hire you for the grunt work, and then maybe let you create some artwork after they see what you can do.

Good luck getting a part time job--most design places I have talked to want full time or internship positions ONLY. I would say too a proficiency with computers and xerox machines wouldn't hurt, on top of software proficiencies already listed. I would bring in a portfolio of your work too.

Oh, and a good lookin' resume too.

I'm suppose to intern at a graphic design firm this coming fall. I have no idea what to expect :eh: I'm kinda nervous about it because I've only done one sem of graphic design (although the professor said that i did some good work :thumb: )

Yup I agree. The only way you could possibly get hired (even part time) is if you know someone really high up in the company who gets you a job. One possibility is that you could do some contract graphic design work for a small company, but good luck finding something like that. :(
