Been around a few months, now I'm comfortable enough to introduce myself.
I'm an international student studying in the U.S, pursing my Master's in Food science. I grew up in Malaysia, (next to Singapore) in South East Asia. Iif you don't know where Singapore is...erm..never mind, I get that all the time. Just remember, I'm from somewhere the other side of the world.
My country's native language is Malay, but we use English intensively so I rarely face language barriers. However, unlike many Malaysians, my Chinese/Mandarin, Cantonese and Hokkien dialect speaking capabilities are quite pathetic.
A/M Preferences
Anime/manga is common in Malaysia and very cheap. Most of them are subtitled/translated in Chinese though. Bummer. But I love manga more since I use them as references for drawing. I enjoy both shonen and shoujo. Shonen types include Naruto, MAR, Blade of Immortal, Bleach, Houshin Engi, Shaman King, RK, BlackCat, Detective Conan while shoujo include HanaKimi, Penguin Brothers, Imadoki, Invisible World. Animes I do like include Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, KareKano, Fruit Basket, GetBackers, SlamDunk, sCRYed.
I try to be liberal and open-minded in many topics but I'm definitely anti yaoi/hentai/yuri. For other issues, I'm seeking answers and am still deciding on my stand. I do discuss deep theologies and philosophies....ONLY when I can handle it.
Spiritual Background
I grew up in a Catholic family. But right now, I'm denominationless, serving in a semi-charismatic international student fellowship, consisting of mostly Indonesians and Malaysians. That ministry takes up A LOT of my time coz I'm one of the seniors and need to watch out for the younger sheep/brats. It's hard juggling that along with graduate research.
Drawing habit
I drew a lot as a kid, before anime/manga, my style was based on Archie. Unfortunately, my culture somehow celebrates "engineers", "lawyers", "doctors" ooooohhh what a smart child you have! You can imagine my parents' face when I said, "Ma, Pa, I wanna be a comic artist!" Anyway, despite me being in a science field (I do enjoy it too, everyone likes food!), I persisted with my drawing habit and here I am. [insert victory cry] "Hah, thought you could stop me?!! I'll keep drawing until my last breath!!" [/insert]*maniacal laughter follows*
Other interests
Music: Jars of Clay, Avalon, Cowboy Bebop, Maaya Sakamoto/Yoko Kanno, Hirai Ken, John Pizzarellini (can't spell)
Books: Philip Yancey, Sproul, John Grisham
Other comics: Modesty Blaise, Danger Girls, Tomb Raider, random X-Men
Useless Facts:
1) Rants a lot
2) Loves bishonens/bishoujos....aka pretty ppl
3) Procrastinates, usually fails at being punctual or keeping promises, sleeps in classes sometimes
4) Drives like a mad woman should (but no ticket so far! mwahahaha)
5) Hates dubs (except Mononoke Hime)
6) Hates numbers/figures, mathematics, statistics, calculus, engineering stuff, physics...bleh
7) Animal/pet lover
I'm not really used to sarcasm/style of humor here in CAA but then again, I know other ppl have to put up with my yakking/super ranting sessions so we're even... And I appreciate the mods/admins efforts to keep peace here. I know no one likes to submit to authority but it's not difficult once you actually like/trust the ones of authority. [insert cheesy speech] Thanks everyone for putting up with me and encouraging me in my manga drawing efforts. I'm truly enjoying my stay in CAA and look forward to more of it.[/insert]
