Anything you ever wanted to know about Ash

Name: It was once upon a time Ashley, but since I met these crazy mainer friends of mine, it's now almost always Ash.
Age: Well I'm a senior, does that count? No seriously though, I'm 16...and a half. (to the day, actually)
Class of: 2004
Hometown: Houston, Texas; home of the Texans, the Astros, Enron and the best Tex-Mex food in this country. No I don't speak a word of spanish (I'm taking Latin thank you). I've lived here almost all of my life, except for two years in Bellingham, Washington.
Gender: Female
Physical blurb: Tall, brown hair down to my shoulders, brown eyes
Where you would find me at school: The editor's office in journalism, the history ap classroom, the latin room, the digital graphics computer lab, anywhere polarly opposite of the math hall and the cafeteria.
Favorite males: Lifehouse, the Newsboys, Shatterheart, Lightbringer, my brother Chris, Harrison Ford, Vash the Stampede, Pastor Westfall
Genetic descent: Scottish, possibly British in there too...mostly Scottish though.
Dream job: working at Pixar
Things I'd rather do then work : kayaking, roller blading, ice skating, nestle down with a good book, read some manga, listen to the rain
Speaking of work...: I'm a waitress.
Favorite Authors/Subject: C. S. Lewis, Gilbert Morris, Francine Rivers, Kate Ross, nearly anything involving King Arthur and/or Robin Hood. Yeah I'm a sucker for that sort of stuff.
Movies I'm not ashamed to admit I like : Finding Nemo, Beauty and the Beast, The Patriot, The Man in the Iron Mask, The Princess Bride, Robin Hood, A Knight's Tale
Anime Seen List:Trigun, Gundam Wing, Ronin Warriors, Outlaw Star, 8th MS team, Hamtaro, Tenchi Muyo, Iria...pretty much anything that was aired on Toonami, my main source. What I look for in an anime is good plot, characters more than animation wise.

Well I'd actually be pretty shocked if no one here knew me already. If you didn't know already, I founded CAA August or so of 2001. It's hard to explain how it happened---God just pretty much said, "I have a job for you, are you up for it?" To be honest I'll never really be sure why God chose me to do this job, but I do know that I wouldn't trade it for anything. It's really taught me quite a bit on leadership, decisions, and my own Christian walk. It's also given me two of the bestest friends I could ever ask for. My one goal is to please my Lord by making an impact for Him, and trust me, without Him alone this would not be at all possible. I see myself as sort of the shepherd(ess) of CAA, and I don't want anything to happen to my "flock". I've been a true Christian for about 2 years now, but I grew up in a Christian home. Aside from CAA, I also help out with two other online ministries. I help put Renew, a Christian e-magazine online, and I'm currently auditioning to help with Steelblood, a radio show. Speaking of Christian like things, my church is Calvary Chapel Houston, which is technically non-denominational. We have about 50-60 youth and around 200-300 adults. Theologically, it's like being a more liberal baptist (we're okay with dancing). While all of my friends and family are incredible with video games, I am not. The only one I've ever played all the way through is Ocarina of Time. Still, I like to watch games and follow the video game scene nonetheless. I think my hand-eye-coordination skills are just not up to pace with today's video game standards. Hmm, little known facts about me. I don't know where I want to go to college, but I'm looking at the University of Texas, University of Houston, and Texas Christian University. I love to cook. I'm a star wars freak. My favorite actor of all time will always be Harrison Ford. Thus, I am an avid Indiana Jones fan, as Shatterheart and Gypsy will attest. I love the LoTR movies (who doesn't?) and elves (not the dinky Santa Clause wannabes either!). If you want to see my absolutely thrilled, give me Mountain Dew, Reeses or Cookies n' Cream ice cream. I also love watching football, and my favorite team is the Oakland Raiders. This is actually quite new; the 2002 season was the first time I actually sat down to watch even a single football game. Much thanks goes to Steve for converting me and patiently explaining my silly questions. Whew, this is getting long, but I'm trying to think what else you guys might want to know about me. I spend most of my time online, either talking or fiddling with CAA or something. Someday I hope to settle down with a Godly Christian man and have some little boys.

My first view of Ash:
Riana, the one that put together the Relena and Heero valentine's day theme for CAA. I found it about a month before I actually had an email account, and for some reason, I remembered the site and decided to write to the person who made it.

You know, when I first saw this appear after clicking "get new" I thought that you had just gotten around to posting this now, which would have been wierd. Fortunately, we have post dates.

Well, now I know some new things. I guess I really should thank St. Peter.

You'd never think that a thread in the Who's Who forum would be resurected and esepecially one of this age. Leave it to Pete to bring threads from the grav... archives.

that sounds very disturbing.

Wow ash your only 16 and a 1/2! no offense, but I thought you were older. That very Inspiring makes me want to be a leader of something. Maybe one day I'll get my chance to.

Yeah, I was surprised that you were 16 and 1/2 as well.

Speaking of Mountain Dew, the one with the Hulk on the can tastes wierd; different from the "original" Dew.

Gundam Wing!!!!! Sweet choice :thumb: , I like all the Gundams except SD, I don't like SD because it is too little kidish and it just gives Gundam a bad name (you know what I mean? :eyebrow: ).

You want to work for Pixar eh? I have an uncle who works for them (though I don't know if you'd really call it working, in the Pixar studios extra on the Monsters Inc. DVD you can see him playing foosball! )

You seem kind of young for a senior, did you skip a grade or something? It wouldn't surprise me because you seem so intelligent and mature.

Eeeeeeeeep...

I had NO idea this thread had been dredged up. Sorry about leaving you hanging!

You seem kind of young for a senior, did you skip a grade or something? It wouldn't surprise me because you seem so intelligent and mature.

That is a very excellent question--one I have heard my entire life. (No I'm not kidding, I heard "you're a little young for a third grader" too). No I did not skip a grade. I learned to read when I was 4 years old, so mom didn't see any reason to make me wait til I was 5 to go to kindergarten; long story short I was home-schooled at age 4 til about 3rd grade, went to a private school from 3rd to 5th, and went public school 6th grade to here 6 weeks from graduation. Oh, and my birthday is in December, so that delays things as well.

You want to work for Pixar eh?

Actually I'm not so sure about that. That bio was written in '03 just after my junior year. Now I'm going to UH to pursue a career in graphic design, art history or advertising---whatever works out best. So I could be working for a magazine, a museum, or an advertising firm and be perfectly happy.

Latin is a dead language. Get with the living, girl! Besides, how will you tell some Tejano mugger, "¡Véte o voy a matarte ahora mismo!"

*refuses to learn Latin*

Latins not fully dead, only close. It's still the language used in science and the Catholic Church. If you want a truly dead language, try Sanskrit or something else bizarre.

I believe by dead language one generally refers to a tongue that is no longer spoken by any group of people. Use in science does not count, though perhaps use in some denominations might...

I'd say that the Catholic church's use of latin keeps it from being dead. That's the language they use to disseminate information to the various churches around the world, right? That seems to fit all the requriements I know of.

And once again, the train of thought is derailed...

All official Church documents are in Latin. Anyway, back to the subject of Ashley. Why do you study Latin? Every person I've ever met who studied Latin has been Catholic, even at secular schools.

Any plans for your summer before you ship off to college?

Weeeeell, I'm not going very far for college so I don't have any "last things to do at home" things. I will go back to my waitressing job just a stone's throw away from my house part time, and probably buy new DDR games. ^^ Oh, and go see the King Arthur movie when it opens! Wooo hoo!

I'd say that the Catholic church's use of latin keeps it from being dead.

Well you have to understand, there are (at least) 2 different ages of Latin. I was schooled in Classical Latin, the latin we know of from around Julius Caesar's time. But the latin the Church uses now is classified as Ecclessiastical latin, and there are differences. Pronunciation, spellings, whole word changes, and grammar all evolved into something close but not really the same. Sort of like the difference between Old English and Modern English. So yes, technically the latin I took IS dead. Except for me and the other TSJCL freaks out there who can actually speak bits of it to each other I suppose.

Why do you study Latin? Every person I've ever met who studied Latin has been Catholic, even at secular schools.

That is a very good question. Well, I knew right away I didn't want to take German in high school, and I refused to take Spanish (sticks tongue out at Ingemar). I had hopes of being an archaeologist at one point in time, and I loved history, so I thought, hmm, Latin might be fun. Turns out I couldn't have made a better choice; Latin is extremely easy to learn if you are well versed in literature or interested in vocabulary; it helped me on my SATs tremendously. Oh, and both my parents are medical people, and when I took Anatomy and Physiology it was a great help. And I can't begin to count other benefits---it's a small class, so you have a very close-knit feeling. I was really interested in mythology, and it gave me a chance to compete (last year I was 1st in regionals) with something I was good at. And plus, like I said, it's steeped in history which I thrived on.

I guess in short, I didn't have a real solid "this is why I'm taking latin" reason--I just took it because I thought it would prove useful and it has. And then I got into the club and stuff and well, it sucked me in. ^^

The differences actually aren't that great. The main difference is pronuciation. There are no grammatical differences, but style differences. Since word order doesn't really affect much in Latin sentence construction is really just a matter of preference and style.

Do you use Wheelock's Latin, or some other text?
