any Disney cartoon that had songs (not all of them did. The Black Cauldron didn't have any, which is just one of the reasons it was so bad)

There are a lot of people here on campus who "shun" those of us who like it, because it deals with a lot of topics touchy to the Christian faith - but the way that I see it, it's a beautiful picture of redemption, and needs to be seen in light of positive views instead of "Oh my gosh they are sinning!"

Do rock and roll films like A Hard Day's Night! or Help! count as musicals? (I'm honestly not sure since the songs don't actually have anything to do with the story, they're just performed in the middle of it)

The Sherry Bobbins episode of the Simpsons and also the one where they rent "Paint Your Wagon" and do a whole episode about the characters singing.

My personality is not particularly inclined towards musicals, so of course I grew up in a household that adores them and watches them constantly. I don't think a single Christmas has gone by without us watching White Christmas at least once, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, My Fair Lady, Singing in the Rain, The Sound of Music, and Hello Dolly are watched on a regular basis as well.

Frankly, most don't have bad stories -- they just take so dang long getting to them that I can hardly wait it out. Heck, it seems like every musical I have ever seen is three hours long. Oh wait, pretty much every musical I have seen has been over three hours long. Maybe if they combined the song with the plot and condensed things down a bit I would enjoy them more...... As it stands I get interested in what is going to happen and bam! Ten minute song to sit through before something happens again.

That being said, put a gun to my head and tell me to pick a musical to watch before I die I would undoubtedly pick My Fair Lady.

Honestly, in a good musical, the songs should serve to advance the story or to give the audience insight into characters that they wouldn't otherwise get. A great example of this is the musical episode of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer. In this sequence*, the song serves to both tell the audience why everyone is singing and dancing, why this is a bad thing, and what is at stake for our heroes.

Otherwise I have no idea why a story would be made into a musical to begin with.

*That sequence is spoiler free, but to anyone who watches it, you should be aware that most of the rest of that episode is filled with important story bits, not only for the episode's story arc, but for the entire series up to that point. This is your spoiler warning, before you go looking for the other songs.

Little Shop of Horrors is only like 90 minutes. Definitly the shortest musical I've seen.

Agreed. Finally, somebody else who has seen Bedknobs! I luv that movie! I saw the broadway Mary Poppins, but I kinda like the movie better [it felt long and was aimed at a younger audience. And Phantom I'll see on stage sometime in the future, but I like the 2004 film. C'mon girls, you know Gerard Butler's voice was sexy as the phantom... <.< >.>

Does this mean the stage version is different? I saw the film version expecting good things (mostly because Julie Andrews was in it), and it was cute and quirky for the first third, and really bizarre and a little obnoxious the rest of the time. XD Also, the movie didn't have "Forget About the Boy" in it, which is the only song I was familiar with from that play! XD So is the stage version so much better? I was seriously so confused when I heard people say "Thoroughly Modern Millie is fantastic!" and then saw the movie and thought 100% otherwise. XDD

Also I totally mentioned Fiddler in my first post here! XD I love that play. XD

From a vocal standpoint, I actually think that the only song he really sang well was "Music of the Night." But I can't fault his acting in Phantom.

I'm no fan of musicals, but there are a few I like:
My Fair Lady
Sweeney Todd (saw the stage production with Angela Landsbury...never saw the movie)
Little Shop of Horrors
The Sound of Music
and Disney stuff...

I REALLY want to see Les Miserables. I've heard a few of the songs (and I'm about halfway finished with the book) but it's hard to listen to songs from a musical outside of their proper context. If the chance to see it ever comes by, I'm jumping on it.
