Metropolis

No, this isn't the wrong section, I'm referring to the Fritz Lang classic from 192(6?) on which the anime is based. Has anyone else seen this movie? Despite its age and being a silent film, I find it to be far superior to most if not all movies currently coming out of Hollywood.

Yes, it came out in 1926.
I saw this movie (on video) a number of years ago and thought it was good but not great. Then several years ago it was restored (to the best they could). The image and audio were a lot better quality (and they use the original orchestra music and instruments!) and there were lots of 'brief screens explaining missing scenes' which cleared the story up a fair bit and added about 20 mins running time. I saw that version about a year? ago and it was a huge improvement. I think its was very good and whilst I don't think its far superior to most or all movies these days I do think it was very good and revolutionary for then. My favourite bit is probably in the boiler room and the catacomb scene.
(The restored version is released by Kino Video on DVD).
Its PG in Australia (for adult themes, violence and brief nudity).

And the behind the scenes dvd is also really enjoyable and worth a watch.

I've only seen the restored version. It's sad how chopped up the film was. What we're left with is only the closest we can come to what it probably was originally.

Very true. But the restored one is still a lot better than the original video version. Would be nice to see the original.

Aw, nuts! As a fan of silent movies I've been wanting to see it for a long time. Maybe someday. I've seen other silent movies by Germany from the same era (The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, which was great, and Nosferatu, which had aged terribly - and I don't mean the print) so I'm eagre to see if myself.

Wasn't very good... I didn't see Superman once in it.

Bad joke. Besides Metropolis (1926) was around before Superman (1939). Not to mention Metropolis is just another name for a big city.

It's also the name of a music band and two of Dream Theater's major songs

No, but it had Machine Man (first android on film?).

I thought it was a good joke...

I saw the anime version and liked it. I am intrigued by the original, but have yet to see it. As bigsleepj said, maybe someday.
