Tampopo

Postby Bobtheduck » Sat Aug 28, 2004 1:54 am

If you checked out my queue, you saw my first batch of DVDs included the classic satire film "Tampopo"

I laughed quite a lot once I got the pace of the movie... It is sorta like a Japanese Monty Python

The primary plot is about a ramen expert teaching a woman, Tampopo, about running a ramen shop... This is weird humor, but it is very funny... It goes through parodies of westerns, samurai movies, and a general satire of the restaurant industry in Japan. One of the side plots is about a french restaurant, and there was this scene where this woman was teaching all these girls European ettiquitte, but this european guy is sitting in the back ruining it all by slurping really loud... I was on the floor during this scene...

unfortunately, one of the side threads involves a Yakuza boss, I'm guessing, and his wife or girlfriend or something) involves a big sex scene (supposed to be funny... Think Hot Shots, only this was made in '86)... That's the problem with getting foreign movies, you can't tell when stuff like that is going to be in it...

Still, it is very funny and it is one of those things that you have to watch if you're going to get into Japanese cinema... It's hard to know when that scene is going to show up, but I guess you can skip at the first sign of nudity (or when you see the Yakuza guy after a long time of him not being there) I'm not quite done, I'll update if there is anything else to point out...

EDIT: I sorta walked out to go to the bathroom, but I dont' think anything happened that fast... I just wanted to say that I recognized at least one scene in this movie that was used in an anime... In Nadesico, When Yurika, Akito, and Jun go back to earth and work in the restaurant, the "wonder waitress" thing was from this movie... I still haven't finished it... Got another half hour to go, but it was getting late so I stopped it.

Cool, someone else who's seen this film. It really is awesome, and insanely funny. Unfortunately, I've never seen the tail end of the film.

PS. The slurping guy was an American ;)
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

I saw this movie........wow..... i dont evan remember the time, or the channel i saw it on. but i saw it, and I loved it. Yeah their was a scene or two the movie could do without, I really have no idea why the movie stuck with me, but i enjoyed it a whole lot. The scene in question was hilarious, especially when the younger girls started schulcking speggetti too.

This movie sounds like it's right up my alley. I've been trying to catch more and more Japanese cinema but have been limited since there are not many places in San Antonio that carry these types of films.

From your description bobtheduck it sounds very very good.
