I'll have to check it out. I'm still waiting for Camino 0.8b to become 'real' 0.8 (there's a couple crash bugs in it I keep triggering), but it looks like they've borrowed some code from Firefox because some of the features, particularly the download manager, seem to be converging. On the other hand, Camino just *feels* faster on OS X.

Firefox .9 is just the release candidate.

I don't understand why they either go with Firefox or Camino, rather than having both for Mac.

i'm waiting for the full version* to come out, i'd rather wait than dl and install both versions

*full version of .9, not the release candidate.

At least from a programming view, since Camino is 100% Cocoa and Firefox is not, it would seem logical to go with Camino, but then again, we have Mac versions of just about all the other Moz derivatives too, so what's one more? ^_^

Well I've been using it for a few days now - I like the new appearance, a few niggles in the interface have been dealt with (for example, in the bookmarking).

It does seem to crash a bit more tcompared to 0.8 though, I guess that's what you get for using a release candidate ^_^

I didnt like the new look of firefox .9 Since I use an 800x600 resolution, bigger buttons is a BAD thing.

I just got it, and I'm mostly happy except for a few things:

1. I don't like the fact I can't use my up and down arrows to smooth scroll up and down anymore... It puts the text cursor on the screen and follows the text, which is good for copy and paste, but bad for screen scrolling...

2. I don't like the little thing that says "Let websites install programs" Will that still prompt me? It doesn't give me the option of setting it to prompt, so I'm worried about a flyby virus or spyware instalation... (of course, IE does have a prompt setting, but it doesn't always work and a lot of spyware got installed with no prompt from popups...)

3. I love the tabs! Love them love them! However, I don't like the fact that they are entirely manual. I would love to have all new pages open in tabs without me telling them to. Is this possible?

EDIT:

4. A lot of animated Gifs are messed up... It seems some of the play much faster on here than on IE... Maybe they were supposed to look like that, but I doubt it... It looks like they're on fast forward

There are some things I still haven't tested... Geocities page editor, for instance... I'll report back later when I've gotten a better chance to test it out..

Firefox ROCKS! My favorite thing about it is all the extensions.

Actually, I think you can turn smooth scrolling on. It should be in advanced in the options.

The GIFs seem to be playing at the right speed, or faster than the were before in Firefox.

Honestly, I haven't changed the settings. I know that it will prompt by default if you want to install things (like plugins and whatnot)... ActiveX won't work at all, so that shouldn't be a problem (it's the biggest open spot for bad stuff), and I know I had a site one time which had an EXE file embeded in the banner ads on the page, as I recall Firefox fussed about it with a dialogue box but didn't allow a run/install at all (good thing too).

Check the extensions page, you can find it via one of the folders on the bookmarks menu that comes pre-installed with Firefox. There is an extenstion I think that will do new windows as a new tab... otherwise I simply right-click and open as a new tab (I think there is a hot-key combination that will do it too, also as an extansion)....

And while you're getting extensions, you might want to pick up Adblock as it will give you the option of blocking images and such, it doesn't come with any definitions pre-installed, but you can quickly get rid of some of the common ones by replacing text with wildcards when you block the image and it'll kill off the related files (I did notice that if your filter list get's big it can sometimes slow down Firefox, so you might want to either hunt for a list of common filters or pick-and-choose your battles.

Bobtheduck wrote:4. A lot of animated Gifs are messed up... It seems some of the play much faster on here than on IE... Maybe they were supposed to look like that, but I doubt it... It looks like they're on fast forward

Never noticed that.... then again my use of IE has mostly been on my Mom's machine, and that one is just faster all the way around. Maybe there is a setting somewhere that you can (or have) fiddled with to alter the speed of playback.

Bobtheduck wrote:There are some things I still haven't tested... Geocities page editor, for instance... I'll report back later when I've gotten a better chance to test it out..

Most likely you'll find it broken, and considering that I think I crashed my Mom's brand new PC running XP with it, it shouldn't be a big loss. I'd recommend hand coding, maybe picking up something like Orb to help automate some page generation. I believe this was an issue before with using Sun's Java VM rather than the one that came with IE....

Sadly Yahoo seems to be in Microsoft's back pocket or something. More and more I find that they are less non-IE friendly. If they keep up this trend I feel I will find myself parting ways with Yahoo.

What I mean is that I can't use the arrow keys to controll the scrollbar, but only controll the everpresent blinking cursor... The blinking cursor could come in handy, but not at the expense of the scroll bar control

Hmm... If I click off of any links I happen to be on, the arrow keys, etc control the scroll bar. As for plugins / extentions, I think this is VERY cool. Looks like they've finally figured out what the electronics manufacturers have known for decades...
