DVD burning problem

help! :(

Today I discovered that my hard drive is in danger of overload(it's sadly half the size of my old one). So I decided to burn some files onto a DVD to clear up space. no luck. Less than a minute into the burning process, I get an error message from Sonic RecordNow that says I need to use a different disc, that this one is likely scratched.

The disc is brand new. I was only recording at 2.4x speed...hardly too fast. My drive is compatible as far as I know. The disc is a Verbatim DVD-RW 2.4x disc and I was trying to record roughtly 4.5 gig of data. Everything seems to fit, but for some reason the drive and/or the record program refuses to work properly. Computers are evil!

suggestions welcome. I'm at a loss for what to do.

Hmm. Hard to diagnose remotely, but I would suggest you ensure that you turn off all programs on your computer before burning (including virus scanners and the like) to ensure your burning software gets all the system resources it needs. Just in case, take a look at the disk and ensure there are no dust motes or other particles on it before you insert it into the burner. That might help.

If that doesn't help, I would suspect that there is something wrong with your software or your drive. I would then suggest reinstalling your burner software, and possibly try another brand of disks (although Verbatim has been a good company in my experience). You could also look for a firmware update for your drive, look the model number of your drive up on the manufacturer's website and check for a downloadable firmware.

I hope this helps!

This will sound stupidly obvious but I think any help center will say: Try another DVD first and see if it works.
Finally, what they call 4.7gb is really 4.7 billion bites, which comes to 4.3gb in computer terms.

Sorry for bringing this up, but since you didn't mention it in your post that you did these things, I thought I should ask.

Also Sonic RecordNow is a program I find a bit buggy at times

appreciate the comments so far. ha...buggy indeed. i'm growing very unhappy with Sonic RecordNow.

on the upside, i downloaded this ridiculously simple(and free) DVD burning program that, oddly enough, burned the disc perfectly. So apparently there's some kind of interference with the RecordNow program. *kills it*

Thanks AnimeHeretic and Puritan for the suggestions. :) And yea, if anyone has ideas as to finding the issue with RecordNow, suggestions in that respect are also very welcome. This program i'm using now is pretty much a joke...no way too see how much you're putting on a disc, virtually no options, etc...i'm surprised it works. but it does, lol. miracle.
