WinTools o___O

has anybody else come across this thing on their machine? it's ugly stuff. to see if you have it, go to C:\Program Files\Common Files and see if there's a folder called WinTools. if it's in there, you need to get rid of it...chances are if you've got it, your computer has had serious issues like kernel32 errors, 100% CPU usage, and sluggish internet access.

1. Restart your computer in safe mode by holding down F8 as it starts up. (It might beep at you but that's not a problem, just ignore it)

2. Hit ctrl+alt+delete. Terminate if present: TB_Setup, WinTools, Wsup, WtoolsA, WtoolsS

3. If you're running Win98, skip this step. If you're using Win2000/WinXP, go to Control Panel. Click Administrative Tools and then Services. Stop the following service if found: WinTools for IE service (also listed as WToolsS). Set the Startup Mode of this service to Disabled. To do this, right-click the service and click Properties. On the General tab, you will see a drop-down box "Startup type". Select "Disabled."

4. In the Run box (Start Menu -> Run) type "msconfig". On the General tab, select "Selective Startup".

5. Click the "Startup" tab. Uncheck if present: TB_Setup, WinTools, Wsup, WToolsA, WToolsS.

6. Restart your PC and delete the WinTools folder in C:\Program Files\Common Files.

that should get rid of it!

That's just one of many annoying drive-by installs of spyware... Igetnet, bonzi buddy, fastsearch... There are so many... I want to hang the makers by their finger nails and toenails...

It sucks that people are so desperate to have a website, they'll allowe these ads with flyby spyware...

Yeah, I've seen wintools (and a good portion of all the spyware out there) on the computers at the PC Cafe I go to. Also, I used to see a bit of spyware on my comp pretty regularly, but, now that I don't pirate anything, that's gone down a lot.

Wintools, if I remember, totally screwed up any games I tried to play, used a ton of system resources (for what I don't know), and also, didn't close from the Task Manager. It was one of the more annoying things I've come across, but I don't think it like, put porn links in your favorites or stole credit card numbers or anything. I think it was mostly just a pest.
