Backing up and reformatting is probably wise, but I would recommend a Hard Disk scan. If the computer does something wonky before booting, chances are the MBR (master boot record - the first 512 bytes on the disk) was corrupted. If you get it in the future, sometimes running:

fdisk /mbr
can repair it, but not always. How much do you know about computers? If you can get a copy of the free tool UBCD (ultimate boot cd), you can run various freeware apps and check out all the hardware. It might be worth your time!
