Wellll... this at first started last week as the weekly verse, but... I always ended up talking about things... in the form of a devotion anyways... so... I might as well call it as it is. I will be the first one to tell you that I DO NOT KNOW EVERYTHING! Every day is a learning experience, especially in the things of God. The second thing, I AM NOT ALWAYS RIGHT! If there is something that I say, that you don't agree with, or sounds funny to you, TELL ME! Maybe I have interpreted something wrong, or have the wrong idea about something. OK... so after that little disclaimer... here are some of the verses I have been seeing this pat week, and my thoughts on them, and other random tidbits of stuff.
ABOUT FRIENDS
I think that pretty much everyone in the world has at least ONE friend, a person that they can talk to, listen to, fellowship with, laugh, and cry with. There are those CLOSE friends and then there are those "People you sort of know" ~ Your "acquaintances." What I will be talking about here, will not be the acquaintances in your life, but rather, your BEST friends- the people who influence you, who can pull you up, push you down, pull you threw a storm to safety, or can throw you off a cliff.
the call:
Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. KJV
Mark 16:15 He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. NIV
God calls us to spread his good news, to tell other about him. To whom are we supposed to be telling the good news? "All the world." Meaning: family, neighbors, strangers... and Friends. Once we realize the truth of God's saving grace, that he has saved us from an eternity in Hell:
John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. KJV
HE HAS GIVEN US THE RIGHT TO BE HIS KIDS!!!!!!
That is so amazing. And, of course, we should want to tell everyone about this (But then somtimes apathy comes in... but that is another devo for another time... LOL), especially those who are the closest to us.
The way we SHOULD picture it is this: We are all on a "train" to Heaven. We are on the ONLY train that is going there. It is one way... and it will only make ONE trip. We need to get as many of our friends and family, and those we care about onto this train before it leaves, or before we leave this earth behind us. We cannot take THINGS with us... but you can take PEOPLE with you, because souls last forever.
I don't know if you have thought of this before... but here it is anyway:
Our souls are eternal... we WILL LIVE FOREVER... no matter what we do. But the question is not how LONG we will live... but WHERE. We will live in either eternal JOY in Heaven, or Eternal TORMENT in Hell. Just something to think about.
OK... so now summing all that up... WE ARE CALLED BY GOD TO SPREAD THE GOOD NEWS, and WE SHOULD WANT TO SPREAD THE GOOD NEWS TO SAVE SOULS!
the influence
Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. NKJV
So many times we conform to the world without even knowing it. Perhapes it is music: maybe there is a song where we find ourselves defending: "Well... the lyrics are bad, and talk about things I know I shouldn't be thinking about... but... I only like the music... I don't listen to the lyrics." But the truth is If I could ask that person to recite the lyrics to that song... they probably could, because the words would have worked themselves deeply into their mind... whether they realized it or not. Or... perhapes it's in TV or in movies: "Well... I know the movie has inapropriate scenes it in... but there is only one... and we fast forward it... and the bad language is only every now and then." In the day and age of programs that can get rid of those things, those things are becoming less an issue, but even with that said, we are conforming whether or not we know it. Can people really see a DIFFERENCE in us? Can they put a non-christian and us next to each other and be able to see what makes us different? If not... we have a lot of work to do.
Ephesians 4: 17-24 17So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. 18They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. 19Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more. 20You, however, did not come to know Christ that way. 21Surely you heard of him and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. NIV
We all have sinned... yes... We should be trying to shine the light of Christ into the darkness and reveal to our friends his love... yes. But, here is something else the Bible says:
2 Corinthians 6:14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? NIV
This has applications to marriage, yes. But it also has a deep application to friendship as well. Your best friends. You influence each other in visible ways, but in subtle ways as well. It has been said "Show me your friends and I'll show you your future." You influence your friends, and they influence you. Either you are influencing them for the good or bad, or they are influencing you for the worse or the better. There can be no middle ground.
We can imagine our faith as a lit candle. If your "good" friends are constantly doing bad things, talking negatively, saying bad things to you or about you (joking or not), and speaking of things that are just not of God, it's like they are casting water onto your lit candle... your candle will dwindle, and could even die with influences like that. It's going to be hard to keep your faith, to do what God says, to stay strong, to tell others about Jesus. But, if you are keeping company with people that throw FUEL: words of God, prayer, good deeds, encouragement; then it will make your candle a TORCH. Pray about this... examine why your "best friends" are your closest friends. Is it really because you want them to know God? Or is it because of other selfesh reasons?
the perspective
1 Corinthians 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. NIV
There is ONE message: The cross, what Jesus did there: dying for our sins, so that we may have eternal life. It's the same message, but the way we perceive it is different, depending on what filter we are putting over our eyes, and on what frequency our ears are turned to.
For people to accept the cross, they first have to admit one thing: that they have sinned. Many people don't want to think that they have sinned, or that they have done wrong. They want to think that they can get into Heaven by their own good works, or just by being a relatively good person they will go to Heaven. Many times they will also force the idea of Heaven completely out of their heads... they don't want there to be rights and wrongs... they want to do what they want to do without consequences. To them, the message of the cross is DEATH and FOOLISHNESS because it condemns them to Hell, and they want to brush it off and laugh: they DON'T think they need a SAVIOR, because they don't think there is anything from which to be SAVED.
But to us, who are being RESCUED, the message of the cross is, indeed, "THE POWER OF GOD" because Jesus has RESCUED us. Somtimes It will take more than just telling our friends about Christ, but it will take a change of PERSPECTIVE on their part: their minds and their hearts being changed. That is something I truly believe we need to be praying about more: That God would Open their Hearts and Minds so that they will realize that they NEED A SAVIOR!
