Marcus:|

Mother had asked Brandon about himself, and he was going into more detail answering. I wanted to stay, but my dad motioned for me to follow him upstairs. Mother glanced our direction, but kept her attention on Brandon.

At the third floor, we turned and entered the hallway that ran between me brothers and sisters rooms. I suppose it's a good sign that we did. If he had thought the conversation would get out of hand, we would have continued up to the level I shared with the store room. As it was, the subject would merely be something best not discussed in front of a stranger. The hall ended at the door to my parents room. My father held the door for me to enter after him. Once we were inside, he sank onto the bed, while I sat on the chest beside it.

Dad looked at me for a moment before asking "Why?"

"Why what?" If ignorance is bliss, feigned ignorance should bring a moments happiness. We both knew what he meant, but I would go to great lengths to put off what was coming.

"Why is Walker here?"

"He told you, Dad. His grandmother was from here and he wanted to find out..." I was evading the question, and my father new it.

He leaned back, threatening to fall until the bed swallowed him. Instead, he leaned forward again, signalling the event I dreaded.. Covering his eyes, Dad sighed in resignation.

Thus began the latest round in a fifteen year debate, Some, I have won, other rounds went to my parents. The rest are best forgotten.

"Why will you not give up?"

I hate the look on his face; the tiredness that comes over him and the way his shoulders slump as he attempts the impossible for the hundredth time. By now, my features mirrored his, resignation to a fight long contested that neither wish to continue.

"Can't you see? If you continue, more will die than i care to count."

"But with Brandon we could..."

"What?" My fathers voice was harsh as he interrupted. "So he might be a king, what could we do then? Launch an invasion every time there is a raid? Marcus, you can't hold the human government responsible for the xenophobic acts of idiots!"

There really is no answer to that. I've tried; but I havn't found a good one yet.
