A possible manga-ka who is or was Catholic is Trigun creator Yasuhiro Nightow. According to his Wikipedia article, he was converted to Catholicism from Buddhism (though like other Wikipedia articles, it could be made up).

I've heard this in another context (an article in some magazine, but I can't remember which.) Since I can't come up with the source, I guess it's still second-hand info.
I vaguely recall another mangaka who was a life-long Christian. I'll post again if I remember who it was. It does stand to reason, as many different creators as the industry has had over the years, that the 1-2 percent Christian fraction of the Japanese population would show up as a couple or three within the crowd.

I heard about this a while back, actually. Pretty interesting, and it certainly gives an explanation for Wolfwood's scene in episode 23.
