manga for my little bro

My little brother is 10 years old and he wants to get in on a manga. Now, as his older sister, I get to help him choose. I'm looking for a manga with no swearing,no nudity AT ALL, no.... adult stuff that isn't suitable for his impressionable eyes, violence is fine, but veeeeeeeeeery little blood. He doesn't want ANY romance(boys. :shake: ) or maybe just a little, say the main character and the girl get together, but not too mushy, y'know? Oh, and no magic/sorcery that contradicts Christian ideals, if you know what I'm trying to say. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, and sorry about his... pickiness.

Big O? I've heard of the anime. What's it about? I know the dubbed anime is on Adult Swim on Cartoon Network, so I'm kinda iffy. Thanks for the suggestion!

Wait a minute... The Big O on adult swim isn't even PG-13 movie in its badness! I'm not so sure about the manga, but the anime I've seen had no nudity, no swearing, no nothing. It was squeaky clean when I saw it.

Panegryst, is there any swearing? I went to this anime encyclopedia place and they said that there was bloodless violence and some mild swearing. Well, how many episodes did you see fireproof?
Is the violence like... blowing stuff up and guns? He says he want swordplay, but if there aren't any mangas without bloody swordplay, guns are okay.
If there is any language, how bad is it? If it's not to frequent, I can always get a pen and cross out any language, but it's it's too bad(anything worse than the d-word), then that's out.
Thanks for the suggestions!

I can only think of 2 light-hearted mangas made for male readers: Angelic Layer and Digimon.

*shrugs* Angelic Layer seems pretty shoujo, but I guess with the fighting CLAMP tried to make it for guys... or something like that.

Digimon is pretty obvious that it's for more younger readers... haven't read any of it but if it stays true to the original show there might be the odd light swear, but I doubt it. It MIGHT have a small nudity scene in the first volume, but that I would doubt too.

It's hard to think of mangas for little readers though.

they said 'b-----d' like once. I don't think they ever said 'd---'. (I only read the first volume though  ). The violence is all guns and robots punching it out on the mean streets of Paradigm City.

I can't say first hand, but from what I remember a friend of mine said the Big O manga had a naked chick in the very middle. So you may want to quite thoroughly research that one.

Hmm, well I know some of the Gundam Wing manga is very, very good and would probably be an ok place to start for him. No nudity, I can't recall any swearing (perhaps a d word or two), and pretty good mix of story with character without getting mushy. Also, despite the rumors flying about the series being heavy into shounen ai, there is no outright mention of it. I know my little brother liked it quite a bit.

*points to Gypsy* PM her about Saint Tail; she knows everything about that series.

He might like Di Gi Charat, then again, the main cast is composed entirely of female characters (except the manager). Other than that... Angelic Layer would probably be good. I don't remember anything bad at all. Once again, unless he's really picky about female leads, that one's good. Darn, this is hard. I'm thinking Gundam SEED would be good too, but I haven't read it so I'm not entirely sure.

GAH! Naked chick?! Oh my!! Well, I don't want him to be scarred for life, so I think that's definitely out.
Oh goodness, how many Gundams are there?! If your little brother liked it, Jason probably will. He loved the gundam toys when he was littler.
Er, he says he doesn't want ALL girls. I told him about Saint Tail, from what I read in the anime review and he said it sounded pretty cool, even if the two leading peeps are chicks. But I told him they were the hero types, like Robin Hood. But he might enjoy something with guys better. He's sooooo picky!
What's Gundam Wing about?
He saw every single episode of the Digimon anime, so he doesn't want that.
Again, thanx everyone!

Yeah, Saint Tail does have some very minimal cursing in one volume. That's about it.

Hikaru No Go might be something he would like. It's an interesting story, however one character is a ghost and in the beginning Hikaru finds a Go board with blood on, that's how he meets the ghost Sai, so it may get a little iffy as the series goes on.... Wow.. unfortunantly it's really hard to find good manga for younger kids.. BTW, they did play the first season of Big O on Toonami, during the day. It was a couple years ago though and it might've been edited for CartoonNetwork....

Wow, when did Hikaru no Go get licensed?

PostPosted: Tue Jul 20, 2004 8:50 am

In the January issue of Shonen Jump. I've been reading it ever since! :) It's clean as far as violence, language and risque content, but on a scale of one to ten, it's religious content is like a threee. PArtially because the ghost of a Go master named Sai enters Hikaru's conscious. Sai does look a bit girlish, but it's jsut because of the time period he was from. It subsides as you get further into the series. Other than that, I remember one mention of Hikaru saying thta he felt like a god above the Go board, as if he were creating the night sky placing stones on the board. Other than those minor things, it's a really good series. Highly recommended.

Well, I can just grab a pen and cross out any minor things. I've read a bit about Hikaru no Go and it seemed kinda like Yu-gi-oh, since its all about a game(I think). But he really likes Yu-Gi-oh, so he might like it. Thankies to everyone! Alright, I'll see what he says about it after I research it some more. *goes to look on boards*

I've got the same problem. so far, from the manga's mentioned here my little brother (also 10 years old. :D) has only been interested in Gundam Wing.

anyway, we were searching tokyopop's youth-rated section & he seemed interested in Magic Knight Rayearth?

Does anyone here know anything about it?

Boys? I, personally, like stories with romance. Alot, actually. This could be due to the fact that most RPGs and Anime have romance in them somewhere, but who knows.

I've not read all of MKR, nor have I read most of it. But I can tell you what I know that you might object to:
1)I think there is some minor language. A few "D---" if I recall correctly.
2)Two male characters are gay, but the people at Tokyopop tried to obliterate all the evidence by changing the dialogue. Unfortunately, one think they couldn't hide was the cloud of rose petals that descend upon the two of them when they talk, or the stary-googly eyes they make when they talk. You Bro might not catch it, but, no matter what they're saying, I was like "Something is not quite normal here. . . "
3) I don't remember how these character are related to the plot, but there are these two twin-ish chicks who wears some immodest clothing. It's a little two piece deal. I'd the say the top is equivelant to a very modest bikini top. You know what I mean. So, that's all I know. There could be more, but that's all I can tell you.

No, he really doesn't like those. He read an issue of the avengers and told me how dorky it was.

1) Yes, there is some minor language.
2) No! Eagle and Lantis are not gay. They are just very close friends. That's what Clamp does to their guys.
3) Those would be Tarta and Tatra in the second part.

Hate to disagree with you on that score, but I'm like 99.89 percent sure that they most certainly are gay. Or atleast, they most certainly were before tokyopop sanatized them.

Furthermore, I'd have to disagree when you say that CLAMP just writes male characters that are "close." I've only read parts of 2 clamp series and one of them was Wish. The demony underguy has a crush on his demony over lord (You know the one who has a affair with an angel--- don't you just want to strangle the four ladies of CLAMP?) Clamp does not shy away from making their characters homosexual.

Still, if you have proof to the contrary-- I'm more than happy to hear it.

I never said that Clamp only writes male characters who are close, nor did I say that they shyed away from making homosexual characters. It's just that quite a few of their male characters are very close (Kamui/Fuuma from X/1999, for example).

However, I am sure that Lantis and Eagle have no romantic relationship because

a) in the last volume, Lantis asks Hikaru how she confesses love in her world

b) Lantis confesses his love for Hikaru in both the Japanese and English versions of the anime (which, besides the extra characters and slightly altered ending, remains faithful to the manga).

c) I'm not totally positive, but I think Eagle also confesses a love for Hikaru

d) this one is more perspective than anything else, but, even though Eagle refers to Lantis as one he loves (I'm pretty sure at least), much of the love theme in Rayearth stems from the love between friends and family. You'll notice that, when asked who she loves, Hikaru replies with all those she had met in Cephiro

I guess, in the end, it all just depends on what you think about it, though I am absolutely positive that the nature of their relationship extends no farther than a very close friendship.

I'd like for that to be true. I guess I'll just have to read MKR again.

Lost World, Astro Boy,Digi Charat,Rave master (i dont think it has any cussing) ummn thats all I can think of right now. Though One Piece is Good (it has some mild language)
