Saddest song of all time.

Hey I thought this would be a fun thread...who knows, may spawn some others similar to it.

Saddest songs of all time?

Mine are...

1. Last Kiss (by Wilson and the Cavaliers. Wilson's voice in my opinion was the best for this song ever done yet, though the Cavaliers re-recorded the song in 06 without Wilson. The music was better suited to the mood, but not the singer).
2. The Valley Song by Jars of Clay (hey sad does not mean hopeless!)
3. Where Were You? (When the World Stopped Turning) Alan Jackson
4. Sad Cafe by the Eagles
5. All for Love by Eric Carmen

I'm not a crier, but the top three are the only songs that have ever got tears into my eyes (even then I didn't verbally cry or anything).

Other close runner ups include...
Whiskey Lullabye (No, it does not support drinking if you somehow have never heard this song)
Crying by either Roy Orbinson or Don McLean (I like Don's version more, though Roy I like more generally of the two)
A whole slew of Irish songs that most people here have probably never heard of, but top among these would be.

The Widow's Walk by Brendan Nolan
The Trees Are Growing Bare also by Brendan Nolan

Sally Gardens, a traditional Irish song
Spancil Hill, ditto
By the Rising of the Moon, ditto

Swanheart, Two for Tragedy, and Dead Boys Poem by Nightwish

Fiddler on the Green by Demons and Wizards (one of my all time favorite songs right there. About a little boy and girl who die in a car crash. The little boy died and death takes the little girl too so he wont be alone anymore in death. The Fiddler on the Green is the Grim Reaper)

The English Ladye and the Knight by Loreena McKennitt

"The Widow" by As Cities Burn

Dead man, were you ever alive?
Or was I just a seed you buried deep inside
Some woman you wed
Right before you crawled out of her bed and crept down the hall?
Did you think of me?
Did you even for a second hesitate in the doorway?
It's just something that I'd like to know
Though I'd still love you if told me
You just walked away

My God, what a world you love
Where men bury their sons
And without thought just walk away

And my mother's heart breaks
Like the water inside of her

Dead man, is it being high that makes you alive?
It makes you leave behind three boys and a wife in '89
As the track marks inched their way up your arm
My mother taught my brothers and I not to call you daddy
But to call you father

But I believe there is something here to be learned of grace
'Cause I can't help but love you
Even with a heart that breaks
Like the promises that you made
Like the promises that you made
The promises that you made

My God, what a world you love

Yes, that is very sad :(

Eraser by Alice nine is kinda sad...maybe I'm just senstive with music *shrug*

The gloomy puppy that was abandoned in white sleep
It still can't move, I'll tie it up in the morning... so

My tears flow till I think I can't reach them
The anemone that withers, please don't forget
It'll turn into a butterfly whose colour doesn't fade and return to you someday
Sadness is erased, I want you to stay unchanged

I've forgotten everything, I don't want any changes in my recollections, but
If you become cloudy, I don't even need memories

Even if the colours of the seasons change, you stay the way you were at that time
The light pink flower petals of the avenue of cherry trees danced
The moment you finished climbing up the slope of sadness
At that time, even now, you are smiling, unchanged

Don't cry, I want to ask you
Just one selfish whim, just one wish, please grant it
Weaved from the flowers that you and I liked
The wreath and I, let us float on the water and flow

The gentle melody makes me slowly recollect, towards the goodbye without a promise

"Everlastingly"
Because I'll make you as strong as a thought I can't reach
The anemone that withers, please forget it
Don't ever stop smiling, that's how I like you
Sadness is erased, I want you to stay unchanged

I'll Follow You Into the Dark by Deathcab is probably my #1 sob song of all time.
In the Arms of an Angel by the lovely Sarah McLachlan is definitely another.

And as far as Christian music goes, I've wept so bitterly for humanity while listening to "Nearer My God to Thee" that I can't believe so many people can sit in church and sing it with a straight face.

Brave Saint Saturn - Estrella

i write clever words on paper
i sometimes think i dont belive at all
ive never felt so fake
so false
im such a liar
i couldnt even look him in the eyes
he was 25 like i was
but he was deaf and slowly going blind
he made my faith seem worthless
the things i hoped were pointless
and he fought to stay but
always dreamed that he could leave this place
the angels wings will cover you tonight
hallelujah
press your head
against the breast of christ
hallelujah
It made me feel so empty
collapsing on some dirty bathroom floor
and isn't it just like me to warn his passing breath
when he will never suffer anymore
beautiful his pictures
fading black and silver
and i sing of faith but his was true and fierce
and i will miss him
the angels wings will cover you tonight
hallelujah
press your head against the breast of christ
hallelujah
the angels wings will cover you tonight
hallelujah
press your head against the breast of christ
hallelujah

Nuff said.

Somebody's Baby - Jon Foreman

She yells, "if you were homeless
Sure as h*ll you'd be drunk
Or high or trying to get there
Or begging for junk
When people dont want you
They just throw you money for beer."

Her name was November
She went by Autumn or Fall
It was seven long years
Since the Autumn when all
Of her nightmares grew fingers
And all of her dreams grew a tear

She's somebody's baby
Somebody's baby girl
She's somebody's baby
Somebody's baby girl
And she's somebody's baby still

She screams, "Well if you've never
Gone at it alone, well then go ahead
You better throw the first stone
You got one lonely stoner
Waiting to bring to her knees"

She dreams about heaven
Remembering hell
As a nightmare she visits
And knows all too well
Every now and again
When she's sober she brushes her teeth

She's somebody's baby...

Today was her birthday
Strangely enough
When the cops found her body
At the foot of the bluff
The annonymous caller this morning
Tipped off the police

They got her I.D
From her dental remains
The same fillings still intact
The same nicotine stains
The birth and the death were both over
With no one to grieve

She's somebody's baby...

The only song that I can think of at the moment is "Last Kiss.":sniffle:

I heard the Pearl Jam version first before hearing the cavilers version.

what gets me is hearing the part where the girl goes through the windsheild. And around the end when the guy holding the girl in her last moments.

Just thought of more sad songs:sniffle:

Above All. ( tell me you can't shed a tear after hearing that song.)

Carry my Cross-Third Day. ( the music in this song fits the mood. The lyrics in this song is sung from the prespective of Jesus, only as one can imagine.)

My Immortal- Evenesence. ( I think that song can be applyed in tons of sad situations.)

Broken-Amy lee and Ceither ( if thats how you spell it.)

The single saddest song in the whole entire world, for me anyway, is "Mad World" by Gary Jules, which featured in the movie Donnie Darko.

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head, I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very
Mad world
Mad world

Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday
And I feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher, tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me
And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very
Mad world
Enlarging your world
Mad world

Somehow, that song never ceases to depress me when I listen to it. Another very sad song is "When Somebody Loved Me" by Sarah McLachlan, which was used very effectively in Toy Story 2. But even just the song by itself is very sad and beautiful.

And then "When You're Gone" by Avril Lavigne is one of the most heart-wrenching songs I know, because it makes me think of losing my brother.

When you're gone
The pieces of my heart are missing you
And when you're gone
The face I came to know is missing too
And when you're gone the words I need to hear
To always get me through the day
And make it okay
"I miss you"

I'd say John Denver. No, John Denver is not a song; he's an incredibly insipid folk songwriter whose every work song drives me into existential dispair and wants to make me jab knitting needles into my eye orbits and pull them out, only to stab the speakers of the radio so that it too can languish in the blood and vitreous humor of my hate.
