A Morbid Poll (off sorts)

Postby bigsleepj » Fri Apr 01, 2005 3:15 am

If you could specified it on your deathbed or last will and testament, what song would you have your family play at your funeral as your are laid to rest in your grave, what would it be?

This question is open to every genre of music - spirituals, gospel, R&B, death metal, country music, Johnny Cash (I consider him a genre onto himself), folk or whatever.

Personally I've always liked the song by Vera Lynn (although I don't like her other music) called "We'll meet Again", the song that plays in the end of Kubrick's Dr Strangelove or how I learned to stop Worrying and Love the Bomb as the world falls into nuclear chaos. But I liked that song before seeing Dr Strangelove, so I suppose it would be a good song to play when I die because, from a Christian point of view, it is a definite reality (and its kind of sardonic as well).

Wow, I was just thinking about this the other day! (...) Definately "Blue" from the final episode of Cowboy Bebop, because I love that song (and I love to be melodramtic, I suppose). Although I'm not sure I qualify as cool enough to use that song, seeing as it was pre-used by Spike...who isn't dead.

When I am dead, I wish for the song played at my funeral to be "These Are Not My Pants the Rock Opera" by Five Iron Frenzy. All of the portions must be played.

Chopin's funeral march--there's nothing wrong with the classics. Henry Purcell also wrote a moving funeral piece, for Queen Mary, but that piece is reserved for royalty.

Chris Rice "Untitled Hymn (Come to Jesus)" It reminds me of the eternal life I gain when I die.

Weak and wounded sinner
Lost and left to die
O, raise your head, for love is passing by
Come to Jesus
Come to Jesus
Come to Jesus and live!

Now your burden's lifted
And carried far away
And precious blood has washed away the stain, so
Sing to Jesus
Sing to Jesus
Sing to Jesus and live!

And like a newborn baby
Don't be afraid to crawl
And remember when you walk
Sometimes we fall...so
Fall on Jesus
Fall on Jesus
Fall on Jesus and live!

Sometimes the way is lonely
And steep and filled with pain
So if your sky is dark and pours the rain, then
Cry to Jesus
Cry to Jesus
Cry to Jesus and live!

O, and when the love spills over
And music fills the night
And when you can't contain your joy inside, then
Dance for Jesus
Dance for Jesus
Dance for Jesus and live!

And with your final heartbeat
Kiss the world goodbye
Then go in peace, and laugh on Glory's side, and
Fly to Jesus
Fly to Jesus
Fly to Jesus and live!

"Michael, Row Your Boat Ashore"

I love old spirituals, and this one just seems so fitting for death- the lyrics and tune are perfect.

Hey, they sang that song at my dad's funeral...along with Newsboys' "He Reigns."

Anyway...

Possible choices:

Weird Al Yankovic - Hardware Store. Just because.

Enigma - Return to Innocence. Hey, why not?

Guns N Roses - Don't Cry Tonight

U2 - Where the Streets Have No Name

I could also have [name deleted] sing an opera tune for me...

Hmm...I guess that's it, really.

My mother wants "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac.

Me, there are alot of songs..."I Love You So" By Don Mclain,
"Simple Man" By Lynard Skynard,
Agnus Dei, "Come to Jesus" , "Home Tonight", "Smile", by Chris Rice,
And a hymn I forget the name of...all I remember are some of the words, but They are...special to me....

"I the Lord, of snow and rain.
I have heard my peoples pain.
I have wept, for love of them.
They turn away....
I who made, the stars of night,
I will make, their darkness bright!
Who will bear my love to them...Whom shall I send?

Here I am Lord...Is it I, Lord? I have heard you, calling in the night.
I will go, Lord...If you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart."

Oh, and I want a poem read....one that someone very dear to me wrote....
With your doubt, all is comfort
We are all as we appear
No more questions left unanswered
No more wonder, no more fear
Nothing is beauty, nothing's feeling
Blood where there once was a soul
So I ask you, prove yourself
Make me believe that you are whole

There is a particular song in The Yeomen of the Gaurd by Gilbert and Sullivan that I think would be appropriet. It has a chourus refrain of:

Wilfred shot him through the head
he is very very dead,
and it matters very little whether stone or lump of lead,
it is very very certain that he's very very dead!

or perhaps Breakfast by the Newsboys

Are you referring to Pachebel's canon in D? If so, that is an interesting choice; it is a beautiful piece, but most frequently performed at weddings.

I think my brother and I are both of the opinion that it might be cool to play "Carry On" by Manowar (though I doubt either of us would really do it). It's a song that warms the heart of a metalhead like me:

The north star always guides me
When winter skies are gray
And I wait for the sun when all are one
I shall not betray
Calling at me
I'm waiting when all are led astray

Chorus:
Carry On! My sons forever!
Carry On! When I am gone!
Carry On! For when the day is long!
Forever Carry On!
For as long as we're together
Then forever Carry On!

Darkness all around us
We don't close our eyes
No one's gonna ground us
We were born to fly
Comin' at us no stopping
Born to amplify

(Chorus)

Yea, be my brother
Fight to stay alive
All the world can't change us
With all their burned-out jive
Come get us now we're waiting
We won't run and hide

(Chorus)

Now we're all together
Let's sing a fighting song
One hundred thousand riders
We can't all be wrong
Comin' at us! No stopping!
Always Carry On!

(Chorus)

well, for me i've decided a while back that i want played a song called "crystal river" by a christian goth band called wedding party, basically what it is is this song being sung by someone that's died and is already in heaven standing by the crystal river, it's really good, and perfect for a funeral
