Borders to Shut Down- Completely.

EDIT: Yes, it was bankrupt months ago, but now they are going to be completely gone, for good, by the end of September.

Borders Group Inc. said it would liquidate after the second-largest U.S. bookstore chain failed to receive any offers to save it.

Borders, which employs about 10,700 people, scrapped a bankruptcy-court auction scheduled for Tuesday amid the dearth of bids. It said it would ask a judge Thursday to approve a sale to liquidators led by Hilco Merchant Resources and Gordon Brothers Group.

Who Is Liquidating Borders?
Borders President's Letter to Employees
The company said liquidation of its remaining 399 stores could start as soon as Friday, and it is expected to go out of business for good by the end of September.

Borders filed for bankruptcy-court protection in February. It has since continued to bleed cash and has had trouble persuading publishers to ship merchandise to it on normal terms that allowed the chain to pay bills later, instead of right away.

"Following the best efforts of all parties, we are saddened by this development," said Borders President Mike Edwards. "We were all working hard toward a different outcome, but the head winds we have been facing for quite some time, including the rapidly changing book industry, [electronic reader] revolution and turbulent economy, have brought us to where we are now."

Borders's best chance for survival fell apart last week when talks with private-equity investor Jahm Najafi to buy the company collapsed. Borders scrambled unsuccessfully over the weekend to find other potential buyers who would keep the chain alive.

The chain's demise could speed the decline in sales of hardcover and paperback books as consumers increasingly turn to downloading electronic books or having physical books mailed to their doorsteps.

"When you lose literally miles of bookshelves, it's going to have an impact," said David Young, chief executive of Lagardère SCA's Hachette Book Group, which Borders owed $36.9 million at the time of its bankruptcy filing. "I hope other retailers will now step up and make offers for what they consider to be the prime sites," Mr. Young said. "It's a tragedy Borders didn't make it through."

The loss of Borders may also make it more difficult for new writers to be discovered. "The liquidation of Borders is an irreplaceable loss of a big part of the book-discovery ecosystem," said Michael Norris, a senior analyst at Simba Information, a unit of MarketResearch.com "Thousands of people whose job consisted of talking up and selling books will eventually being doing something else, and that's bad for authors, agents, and everyone associated with the value chain in books."

Mr. Norris said other booksellers, including Barnes & Noble Inc. and Amazon.com Inc., will go after the shoppers who formerly considered themselves Borders customers. "They won't be able to pick up everyone," he added. "If shopping at your local Borders is part of your weekly routine, and then Borders is gone, you may end up doing something other than buying books.

I prefer Barnes & Noble's, but I am still sad to see Borders go. Hopefully some nice bookstores will spring up to fill the void that Borders has left in some smaller towns.

No way. Well, I still have a B&N nearby, but I'm gonna see if I can't snag some online deals. Though..... I'm SORRY to everyone who loses a job because of this!

I am so sad now. Borders was my favorite. I liked the atmosphere of Borders better than Barnes and Nobel and other stores. D: Aww man...

T___T Even though I usually go to Barnes and Noble, I still spent a lot of time in the Borders cafe. It's sad to see any book store close. Hopefully someone comes in to fill the gap that they'll leave behind.

I hate seeing bookstores close. Ah well, on the bright side, maybe we'll snag some good sales from this!

Sadface. :(

At my mom's house, we literally only have a Borders at our mall (closest to us), a Borders Outlet store, and an extremely tiny Waldenbooks (Owned by Borders). The latter two I hardly ever visit.

I'm pretty sad to hear about this.
Guess I can only hope that Barnes and Noble takes that empty spot in the mall when the time comes...

I know, I like Borders' atmosphere more too. It's not too big a deal for me though, as a Books a Million recently opened near where I live, and it has a bigger selection of books than Waldenbooks does, which I suppose will close along with Borders.

Half-Price Books is where it's at. B&N tends to be pricey, so I usually go to Hastings or HPB.

Sad to see a bookstore close, but there aren't any Borders near me, so not a huge loss personally.

I'll have to go by the ones in my area. They'll probably have some sweet deals if the stores are about to close.

I do really feel sorry for the people that are losing their jobs. I know personally how hard it is to find a job in this economy.

I like Half Priced books. Like all used stores, their stocks tend to vary widly from location to location. There's something new every time you go there.

The crazy thing is, the Boarders in the Mall of Louisiana was a big part of the new renovations they completed. In fact, it's one of the biggest stores out there, and it's only been there for the better part of 2 years. I'll have to take a picture or two of it to show you guys.

I would love to go to Boarders with my netbook and take advantage of the free Wi-Fi access while Jiro was getting his oil changed. I would just order a large Strawberry FruitKalua, find a seat by the window, slip on my headphones and just relax while surfing the web. Whenever I go to the mall, it's always my first and last stop. I could spend most of the day going through their 1/2 priced books and seeing what new manga they had available.

It is sad that so many people are going to loose their jobs, but I have to admit that I am interested in seeing what kind of deals they're going to offer for the closing.

I find Barnes and Noble stores to be stuffy and unwelcoming, very "give us your money and get outta here already", whereas Borders stores always felt inviting, as if they wanted you to stay and read a while. Maybe that's why B&N is still in business and Borders isn't. :<

I always found it to be the opposite! Barnes and Noble's always felt like a library to me, and Borders felt like more of a traditional store.

As far as I know, the two have the same shelves and design everywhere, so maybe it's just a difference in the actual locations they chose.

This :( I never felt comfortable just browsing around Barnes and Nobel like I did in Borders.

I'm very sad. :( Like Airi said, our local Borders store has been closed for a couple months now, but it's depressing to know I can't drop by one that's in another area. Our Waldenbooks has been closed for about a year now, so that's been gone even longer. :( Borders has a better selection of manga (at least in my area) than Barnes and Noble. Unless it's a really popular series, our Barnes & Noble has only volume 1, 2, and 9 of a series. Or at least it seems that way. I love my Half-Price Books store to death (let's hope they don't take that literally; I don't want them to go away too), but they don't really have new books, since they're a USED-books store. I guess it's only Barnes & Noble now.....Ratsssssssssss.....

I live in Southern Md which is the lower part of Prince George's County if you draw a line from Fort Washington across to Upper Marlboro and include the counties of Calvert, Charles and St Mary's. Borders is the only bookstore left in Waldorf Md in Charles for the whole area. You can travel over the Potomac River to VA or travel to the Northern part of Prince George's County above Central Ave and further to get to a Books A Million or Barnes and Noble if you want to brouse for books or reading materials.
Now I have a favorite comic book store in the area but you can't get some of the books you want there. I could request they order more manga than I buy now but I want to brouse new manga before I order it as part of my book box in the store.
I am asking friends to start emailing Books A Million and Barnes and Noble to ask them to move into the area before Borders closes so to not have to wait for them to take over the building Borders is using now.

Lol this is so old. My Borders shut down a few months ago. It is sad that it is gone but it was nice to take advantage of the going out of business sale. I agree that it had a better atmosphere and setup than barns & noble and also most annoying thing for me is that Borders had a Horror section whereas Borders just shoves all the horror books in the sci-fi/fantasy section.

Please read again Wolf Man, this is about Borders ceasing to exist as a company, not just closing a few stores, and this only happened in the last 2 days.

I'm guessing this means that their digital retail arm will be going down as well?

Yeah I always feel welcomed at B&N, it feels comfy, and has a wonderful selection. So I'm not sure what everybody is talking about. XDD

Sad news. Didn't buy from Borders often, but sorry to see them go!
