Press X To Not Die

So, there's this annual international event called Global Game Jam, where amateur and pro game developers around the world join up to slave for 48 hours without pay to create an original video game. My local game lab at school hosted such a game jam, from which I have just returned, with a new Flash game!

It's pretty simple, just: Press X To Not Die (except not!). Our GGJ page is here.

It's pretty buggy-- collision detection is kind of screwy-- and the art was pretty much a first pass, but it's playable and KIND OF INSANE. This year, the theme was Deception; our local theme was Abstraction, and our constraints (choose one) were Rain, Plain, and Spain. I was an artist, and did all the non-cutscene art except for the last cutscene (which you'll have to win to see!).

And if this wasn't enough to sate your hunger for 48 hour games, I highly recommend RunRunRunJump, another game made in my lab, if only because its a game whose background music goes "Chord Chord Bass Bass Bass Melody" and had a gun that says "pew pew" and that's AWESOME.

I'm not so sure that was a happy ending... Look at what she did because of a silly toilet seat. Imagine if he left a pair of briefs on the bathroom floor or occupied the only TV in the house during days of our lives to watch MTV3 or 4 or whatever one actually has music on it.

I was at our local Game Jam. Theme was Deception and our constraints were Net, Set, or Pet.

I was fortunate enough to get a time interested in my idea, a team of four programmers, leaving me to the art. : D

Our idea was a platform/puzzled where the player rotates a light around the room. Certain platforms and blocks will cast a shadow over other platforms, blacking it out and "deceiving" the game into thinking it isn't there. This helps the player move through walls and avoid enemies, etc.
We also had "filter" blocks that cast rays of color instead of shadows, which would make matching platforms and enemies vanish.

Sadly, our game was not completed, as the programmers literally took all three days just to figure out the light/shadow mechanics. Thankfully, the judges still gave us Most Original Idea and the programmers intend to continue working on this idea until it works. C:

The bit with the bus and the guy on the Vespa threw me off so many times. I was like, "I'm pressing X. Why am I dying?" Ten tries later . . . "Oh. Right."
