All PS3s immediately have a price drop, and the system will be released by September 1st.

It's the same price as the Elite, at the same number of gigs. This will be interesting.

This was possibly the worst kept secret in gaming history. The only thing that wasn't known was the size of the hard drive.

Regardless, it's nice to have confirmation on release date and price. I wonder how long it will take Microsoft to respond with a price drop of their own?

Now if only the wife would let me buy one.

The big rumors I'm hearing is that the thing won't be able to do Linux... And that it will have expandable ram. The ram mostly being needed for a functioning Linux machine, so...

That kind of sucks... I wanted to put Linux on mine (and may still when I get a harddrive upgrade) but I suppose the Linux enthusiasts can always still put Linux on the 160 gig version until those go bye-bye.

Also, crossing my fingers on the reliability of the slim... The PS3 has got to have been the most reliable Sony device ever made... Not counting on this trend getting better, but we'll see.

As far as I'm aware, all of their consoles with the hardware problems are concentrated in the first release. The subsequent slimmed and redesigned versions don't tend to have those problems.

Hmmmm, this might actually change my mind from buying a 360...

Something about this had struck me wrong, and now I know what it is.

The slim PS3 is 100$ less than the Elite 360. Or at least, it is currently. Was there a price drop announcement that I didn't hear about?

EDIT: Did some online searching, and found some rumors/ads showing the elite dropping to $299. I haven't seen anything about the arcade/Pro pricing, which will probably make all the difference.

The Pro is no longer in production. The Elite will take its place at 300 dollars. Not sure if the bundle will come with it, or if it's just the system.

Once the Pros are gone, there will only be the Arcade (no Harddrive) at 200 and the 120 gig Elite at 300.

EDIT: Oh, and the best news of all,

Gamestop lowered the price of their 60 gig refurbs to 320 dollars. So for an extra 20 bucks, you can get 99%+ BC, 2 extra USB ports, and a memory card reader built in... Seems worth it to me. I may chip in with a friend or two to buy one for another friend.

That makes me wish I had the money to get a 60 gig model now.

...almost.

Yeah... I cry at the thought of my 60 gig dying on me, particularly if I'm in another country...

There is that patent SOny filed for EE and GS emulation, so we know that despite their constant denials, they're LOOKING INTO Emulation... even if it's not going to show up until NEXT gen...

I like our 80gb. I don't like that we paid 600 dollars for it. But, c'est la vie.

My PS2 still works, and I like using the hard drive in it, so... I'm good. I'm not complaining. It's just the power-saving features and the remote start function that I'm wanting... because I don't like walking across the room to turn the thing on and off... but I can get over that.

The Slim released today. I work at the local Best Buy...apparently we got them in last night. I'm gonna take a wild guess and say most people don't know yet, because I only sold one the entire day.

There haven't been any ads on TV for the new lowered price of the PS3 yet... Grr... I'd venture to say advertising (or lack of it, or lack of good ads) are one that that kill Sony.

*sigh*

I bought one.

Actually, I don't know where the "9/1" release date is coming from because I saw some on display at best buy at 8/29. Talk about poor marketing.

I don't think anyone's mentioned it or cares, but the PS3 slim changes the thing that bugged the hell out of me the most.

No more Spiderman font.

9/1 was the worldwide release date meaning it should be in stores in all major markets by then. US, Canada, Mexico, UK, EU, most former Soviet States, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, and South Korea will surely have them by that date. I'm sure India, some African countries, some in South America, and possibly some Pacific Islands will get it later.
